First Year for Coaches

It'd be easier if you folks advocating patience can tell us what is your cutoff point for 30-40 point blowouts being acceptable. Even easier, when is it permissible to be objective and expect any measures of improvement?

Well, I would say the fact that we won a meaningful SEC game for the first time in four years is meaningful improvement. Worley improved greatly, as did our offense, until he got hurt. You can't expect a team that had three losing seasons in a row to all of a sudden dominate the competition. The teams that have blown us out are Oregon, Alabama, Auburn, and Missouri. They have a total of three losses this year. At some point u have to step back and look at the big picture. We have a talent void. Is Butch the answer? I think so but that could just be my optimism. I don't think we will know for a couple of years but you can't judge him based on year one vs top ten teams. If u are then u have to mention South Carolina which was a big win for the program.

We are not near the level of (most) of our competition...

We are not coached very well...

We are not prepared for most games...

We are in the midst of another losing season...

Other than that?

This.

Look. This team IS talent deprived. When your kicker is the only one on the team that can catch up to the kick returner, you are lacking in team speed. Pure and simple. I love this team as much as anyone else. I bleed orange. This season has been extremely hard to watch at times, but I do feel the future is very bright for our beloved Vols! Jones' first year at Cincy was 4-8 I believe. If everyone would calm down and think remember, we are actually 1 win ahead of where we should be according to the predictions before the season started thanks to the USCe victory. That game and the Georgia game gave us a brief glimpse into the near future for this team. There are great things ahead. The toughest schedule in college football (possibly ever) finally has caught up and bringing us back to reality.
Patience is what is needed. Coach Jones will get us turned around. IIRC, his 2nd year at Cincy was 9-3. So, that is an indication that Jones' team will show marked improvement in year 2. Stand behind The Orange and White! GO BIG ORANGE!!!!

People will say it's because of talent. Some have said we don't have the right personnel to fit our "scheme". There is truth to that, but it takes less time to find out how good our coaching staff can be.

I was not concerned about the W/L as much as I wanted to be. I was concerned about our team's progression and coaching decisions.

So far, I am not impressed by our play calling. I'm still trying to figure out why they keep calling the "Tossed Reversed to Pig Howard" play in EVERY GAME! You know, the one that we always lose at least 3 yards on?

I feel like we are afraid of trying things new. I really hope these coaches are not set on just one certain scheme/mindset/style, etc...

I swear, if I see that damn Pig jet sweep (the one that has about -30 net yds over the last 2 seasons)one more time, I'm gonna go postal....

Clearly, So Car is the anomaly at this point. They better get a hell of a lot better over the bye week or they're gonna get embarrassed for second straight year by Vandy

well, there are a lot of problems with Vols football, talent is a part of it and players being put in to multiple schemes over the last few years and them having problems with the basics should be expected, the bad angles and such

there is another problem and it is with the coaching, the Vols have another set of coaches, which we all know and the problem is pretty simple, most of them are on a learning curve to the SEC,which is a huge step for them,it is a curve that must be learned in a hurry and it is showing right now

like me and others have said,it is going to be ugly and it is going to take time, there is a reason that CBJ and staff are trying to get more JUCO players recruited,to get more speed and experience on the team

i'm no expert or anything, but i'm guessing it is going to take CBJ around 5 years to get the Vols back to where we want them to be at,there isn't going to be any 2 or 3 years turnarounds,it is going to be ugly and take a hell of a lot of work
