The question: Which teams outside the top 25 of our CFB Future Power Rankings could make the list next year?

Tennessee Volunteers (No. 29)

What immediately stands out about the Volunteers is how highly we rated their recruiting efforts. Our panel has taken notice of second-year coach Butch Jones' strides to put together a strong roster.

Tennessee's 8.4 recruiting rating was higher than 16 of the top 25 teams, including the top-10 Oklahoma Sooners, Texas Longhorns and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Obviously, that bodes well not only for UT's recruiting score, but for future talent and coaching scores.

The Vols currently have RecruitingNation's No. 12 class for 2015, and they posted the No. 5 class in 2014. While those prospects develop, it could be another rough fall for Tennessee. The line play is at ground zero, and other positions are slowly evolving. That isn't good news for a program that has not had a winning season since 2009, when Kiffin was head coach.

If Tennessee found a way to win six games and return to a bowl, the recruiting momentum could be enough to push the program into the back end of the top 25. For a school that has not won a lot in recent years, Jones at least has the national perception trending upward. It just isn't a short-term fix.

"I think Butch can coach," Tom Luginbill, one of our panelists, told me this week. "I just hope people there understand that it's going to take some time."

It's only going to get better from here. Getting guys that are in love with the school, not the coaching staff alone, getting guys who work hard in the classroom, and that have chemistry and camaraderie with each other. They're doing this thing right.

I'm predicting 2016...the Battle at Bristol is going to be the start of a new day of Tennessee football. I think this year will be good, next year will be better, but 2016? Hold onto your butts.

The key is just staying calm and collected if this upcoming season doesn't go as expected.

nope...

but this doesn't sit well.... just because:

"has not had a winning season since 2009, when Kiffin was head coach"

All these outsiders keep preaching patience to a long suffering fan base. I would argue that we have been more than patient considering the dumpster fire going on at most of our major programs in the last 5 years. With that, Butch has been recruiting well and the results will come with time so hang in there guy/gals it won't be much longer.

Unless an unexpected season means our first 8-loss season, I would think the season not going as expected would be a great thing.

It will go as expected if your expectations are realistic.. (6-6 or 7-5)

Exactly. 7-5 would be a great year. 6-6 would be an acceptable year. 5-7 (which is possible) would be a disappointment, but still understandable. The thing that gives me hope, however, is that last year's 5-7 record could have easily been 7-5 or 6-6 if (a) Pig held onto the ball against UGA and/or (b) Dobbs run hadn't been called back against Vandy. Losing the whole OL and DL is going to hurt, but the skill positions should be much better. I think the DL will improve with Maggitt playing DE, etc., and last year's DL was pedestrian. OL may be different, but it will be decent I think.

Of course recruiting is a fluid situation, but Rivals has us ranked 5th, 7th on 247, and
8th on Scout as of this morning.

I really think you are right. If we just go bowling this year we are exceeding reasonable expectations. I think next year 6-6 or 7-5 and a bowl win would be a good showing. I think there are some unreasonable expectations for 2015 in more than just a periphery of Vol fans. I, like you, see 2016 as the year to contend for the East (of course I want it this year!) and hope patience prevails.
