Wow 8 tackles?!?!?!?!?! Man this kid will help us win next year for sure!!

smh the star gazers are out.
Yeah. Meanwhile Ohio State's top WR Chris Olave was a 3 star from the San Diego, CA area, but people 4 years ago would have told you he's an afterthought recruit.

These recruiting sites and stars are fun, but they are completely unreliable.

Yep, the OSU D Line and LB's made all the tackles before allowing the DB an opportunity to make a tackle.

Blind or not we need all the DBs we can get
Yeah, but don't you get excited because one that was thought to be a really good player but underperformed might actually end up being a really good player or at least a good player for us when we might have walk-ons on the depth chart if we get too many injuries.

Seems reasonable to think their May be a few players on the bench of playoff teams that could contribute on 3 win teams...

Was he that bad, or was the talent in front of him that good? Certain schools, mostly Bama, their second stringers could come here and start.

Not sure what the case is with this guy but Ohio State has garnered a reputation as being a great place for secondary players, particularly CBs, with the draft success. I bet the depth chart is tough to navigate up there with all the talented players on campus. Maybe this guy is good but just got lost in the shuffle. Maybe he didn’t live up to his billing and isn’t quite the player he was expected to be. In either case, I think he may be a good risk for UT given our secondary depth issues - especially with Shamburger likely gone, Key gone, and so on.

Recruiting services get it right more often than not.

They have some value.
But the problem is, your average fan equates a star rating to a prospect and automatically assume that prospect is of the same caliber as the other ones who share the same star rating.

And the very process of ranking is far too biased.
About 10 years ago when I was scouting, I helped get exposure to two recruits from the same high school. One ended up at Baylor. The other at U of H. Both were either 2 or 3 star depending on the service. I told my superiors these kids are some of the best athletes in then state of Texas. But they didn't go to regional camps. All they did was completely dominate individually every Friday night.

Regardless. They both did pretty well.
They both are Pro-Bowl defensive backs.
One was NFL DPOY recently.

So you see, you have to forgive me if I don't buy into that system. Because it's far to imperfect.

Just throwing this out there after watching some of Tyreke's HC highlights. Frequently, kids get analyzed and encouraged to "be" a specific position player as it will supposedly give them the best opportunity to succeed at the next level per the scouts/analysts/coaches. Also frequently, to get the big offers they go that direction since it may be a position of need with the schools of which the player has the most interest in attending. I call this the Marsalis Teague'ing of HS kids. Vol fans that remember know what that means.

Teague was a strong offensive talent in HS as a QB. He did not have the physical/talent skillset to play QB at a high P-5 level and he knew it. So he came to UT to be WR. He was perfectly suited to be an excellent slot receiver. He played S in HS as well since many players go both ways at smaller schools. Dools needed depth at CB since we stunk in the secondary. So a developing, talented offensive player as a freshman was moved to CB - where he absolutely stunk up the field until he graduated. He did it to help the team and ruined the upside of his career in the process. If you met or knew his family you would know why he did it - some of the finest people you would ever want to know.

I hate this stuff with a passion. It was obvious from HS through his freshman year at UT on film, that he had an offensive mind and skill set. He looked to avoid contact coming off the LOS and create space. He was not physical. He had quick moves and great hands with an ability to find open zones for the QB. So, his natural instincts screamed offense and as a result he stunk on D even though he gave it all he had.

What I saw in Tyreke is the same type thing. A bit more physical, but also a run to daylight and get in space. Not a D-back, IMO. No surprise he did not succeed, especially with the talent back there at OSU. I don't think they should go after him in the portal.

Same thing has happened to Alontae thanks to Cornbread. Remains to be seen if he will ever truly make the conversion. Which is why most who see him as a D player see him as a S instead of a CB. He loves being out in space and go for the ball. He is physical - when running straight ahead to make a tackle, but not so much in press man coverage. He simply does not have the quickness for it at CB.

Same thing happened to Rashad Baker under Phil, except he was physical and talented enough both ways to make the conversion (which is rare) and play in the league. He also became a S instead of a CB, which was an easier conversion.

I would not say that they are unreliable, but there are definitely some misses. Lots of kids don't get noticed because they don't do the camp circuit and some 5 stars are that because of their athleticism that does not always translate great to the football field. But, I get your point.
