Dan Fleser: Lady Vols Looking To Rennia Davis As SEC Tournament Starts

Kellie pointed out one of my favorite things about Rennia this year, and that's her ability to get "garbage buckets." She finds a way to score even if she's being smothered:

“When she is mobile,” Lady Vols coach Kellie Harper said, “she is hard to guard. She’ll get junk plays because of her athleticism and her mobility at times. In addition to us looking to go to her, she’ll find some garbage buckets every now and then. That’s good to have as well.”

Enjoyed that, thanks for sharing. I thought Flessor retired or something, didn't know he still covered the LVs.

Stay mobile is the key. Davis only doesn't score when she (and the rest of the offense) is standing. Flu weakness may account for a bit of that, understandably.

Raise your hand if at the end of last year you thought Rennia would score in double figs 99.9% of games this season. We knew she could, but not that she would. She totally deserves 1st team All-SEC.

I'd like to hear her talk about how her improvement came about, especially the focus and consistency. Was it gym all the time, special coaching, a long vacation, or what. Icing on the cake she's a willing team mentor. What a difference a year makes. I keep marveling at this because we haven't seen it in like, forever.

Interesting KJH confirmed she does not read the internet or print articles or look closely at other teams scores, or try to access chances of getting to the tourney. As with most real life coaches, she stays narrowly focused on what it takes to win games, which in turn takes care of the other stuff. As we suspected, she does not dip in for tips and ideas. No doubt also very strongly suggests the players do the same, as LV staffs have for years. I think most of the UT men's team gives up public social media during the season.

Same here. I can't recall any Lady Vol player, ever, who made as big a leap in focus and consistency (and leadership) in one year than has Rennia Davis. When we consider that she always gets every opponent's best defensive effort, what she's been able to do this season is nothing short of amazing. Also, Davis is a naturally reserved woman, so the fact that she has been able to be such an effective leader while being a quiet person is special. I think having Lou Brown around has helped in that area a great deal, but I am confident that this season has shown so much leadership growth for Rennia that even when Lou isn't around next season she'll be able to handle the team on her own.

If she hadn't been named All-SEC I don't know if I could have handled it. lol
