This isn't an official postgame report, but just some things I noticed during the game. Here we go

1. I really like Robert Hubbs' coordination. He's very balanced and has great footwork on the offensive end. He looks to be a little more raw than I thought he would be, but definitely is going to make a big impact this season. Oh, he can stroke it too.

2. Josh Richardson's handles look much better. He dribbles a little more lower and seems to have quicker moves with the basketball. I'm not 100% sold on his shot yet, but it does look better.

3. The defense isn't there yet, but they did a good job of not fouling. It's going to be tough sledding with the Davis/Maymon combo at the 4 or 5. There decent length but it seemed like easy layups and floaters for Florida State. If I'm Martin, I need to figure out how to fix that.

4. Armani Moore is a monster at finishing. Made three tough shots and is so active on the defensive end. I love him at the 3 this season.

5. I know there isn't much room, and defensively he is still a little weak, but six rebounds in ten minutes is tough to keep out. D'Montre definitely looks bigger too.

6. Finally, we get to the pace. Martin said he didn't call an offensive set, so 105 is a nice score to see. The pace is definitely faster this year. Stokes likes to run and is in great shape, and with athletes like Hubbs and McRae on the wings, you can't ignore that type of play. I feel half court offense is still paramount to winning basketball, but right now I like what I see. I'm interested in the pace Barton sets Wednesday.

7. I ignored the stats for Maymon because I just wanted to see him. He looked like himself. He moved laterally very well. His jumping ability was the same. He didn't have a problem making quick cuts. This is a good sign. I don't expect a lot of minutes till SEC play, but I liked what I saw.

8. There seems to be more of an desire from Martin to attack the basket. There were a ton of pick and rolls in the game. There was very few screening action to free up shooters. The only three's were drive and kicks, with a couple pull ups from McRae and Hubbs. There was even more individuals posts up from screens. I liked when they ran a 1/4 pick and roll, with a little cross screen to free up Stokes on the block. This created spacing for Stokes and opened up the backside for offensive rebounds.

9. A.J. Davis is a really interesting prospect. Great length, really quick first step, and his activity level is better than I originally thought. I'm hoping he can improve his rebounding, because he got pushed out too easy. But the offensive talent is there to create mismatches.

10. Good, solid performance. The offense looked really good, and the defense wasn't there. I prefer it be that then the other way around. The freshman looked solid and I liked what I saw from the offense without the starting PG. If I had a big question right now, it would if UT has enough interior defense. If I had a biggest positive, it was attacking the basket. Can't wait till November 12th, but we got one more preseason game to get better.

Go Vols!!! :hi:

Thanks for the analysis for us non-basketball experts, but I enjoy it anyway.

Looking forward to the start of the season to see what the Vols can do.

I will take our starting 5 over any other in the country.

Agree with all points Z except for this one. Armani did look good, but he won't be getting minutes at the 3, there just aren't minutes there to be had. If he's going to get minutes it will be at the 4 behind Maymon. I said it yesterday, I think the Davis/Moore combo will continue and Martin likely will just go with the hot hand each night at that spot.

Also, little disappointed no mention of Stokes. Thought you'd be elated with the way that he looked yesterday!

One other thing I noticed that I meant to preach on, cause it's big IMO...we were 6/15 from deep, 40%. Last year in games we shot over 40% from 3 we were 8-0, I don't think that's an accident. One of our missed yesterday was on an AJ Davis half court shot as the clock winded down, so really we were above 40% on actual attempts.

That will be something to watch, if we can keep that numbers down around <15, and shoot 40%ish, that means we're taking good shots and hitting them, which we did yesterday.

Not getting Moore consistent minutes would be a bad mistake and he should playing some three.

I agree on minutes for him, he just brings that spark that's contagious, again though I just don't see those minutes available at the 3. McRae and Richardson are gonna get 30 plus that's a guarantee,so unless Hubbs is giving minutes to Moore he'll have to get them at the 4.

I mean that's where he played yesterday, and that's pretty much exclusively where he has been practicing at as well, so I imagine that's where he'll be going forward.

Moore played some 3 actually when Maymon Davis was in if I'm not mistaken.

I don't recall that as when I was there I tried to make note, but I could be mistaken. As I said though, I know he's been primarily practicing at the 4, and I personally think he's more effective there.

I like Moore and what he brings and want him to get minutes, but I only see possible minutes consistently at the backup 4 and not 3.

Good post Z. A little more effort on D and a consistent effort down low on offense should give Xavier all they want to handle.

Speaking of Xavier, checking out their roster and exhibition minutes, they aren't very big. Stokes should dominate and force a double leaving Maymon open, or guards open for 3s.

1. Need better post defense, but if we can push the pace and control tempo, it may allow us to mask the deficiency in size we have down low.

2. Maymon is a hack of a passer for a man his size.

3. Stokes having lost 20 lbs looks to have made all the difference in the world in his quickness. He made moves in that game I never dreamed of seeing him make (the reverse layup and turnaround fade from the FT line come to mind immediately). 0 TOs for the big man.

4. AJ Davis will be plenty serviceable next year and beyond. He needs to get bigger and stronger, but an offseason with Nic will make that happen.

5. Hubbs looked smooth on his jumpers and seemed active around the basket. There's no denying he's an athlete for sure.

6. Armani Moore has to get minutes. I don't even care if its at PG and Maymon brings the ball up the court (somewhat tongue-in-cheek). He is a jack of all trades, master of none type guy who reminds me of a poor man's JP Prince without all the fluff and antics at this point. His offensive repertoire may never catch up to allow him to be a full-blown offensive weapon, but he just makes things happen. Very active.

7. Love the unis.

8. Darius Thompson, in 20 minutes was efficient. 4-6, 9 pts, 2 rebs, 4 assts, 0 TOs.

9. We only shot 15 three-pointers, and scored 105 points. More of that please.

10. Total domination on the boards. Good to see, even if to be expected against Fla Southern's diminutive lineup. Nice to see Jordy go in and get 9 rebs. That's effort from your leader, and is often contagious.

I don't care where Moore gets his minutes, but I hope he does! At least 15-20 a night. He brings so much energy out there and is going to give the crowd one nice block a game! I love players like him that don't really have a position, they just go out there and do whatever you need them to do.

I love Moore, 15 minutes is perfect for him because he can go 110% the whole time, which is what makes him so effective. Those minutes may have to come at AJ Davis' expense, or us going ultra small with Moore at the 4, and Maymon at the 5.

Also though, Moore can play really 1-4 if Maymon or McRae is in there to bring the ball up and josh to defend the opposing point. So on any given night if stokes, Maymon, Hubbs, Davis, Barton or Thompson get in foul trouble he may be the beneficiary.

I like the way you are thinking now. Moore just plays ball. Simple as that.
