Florida State: Cautionary Tale

Apparently 17 transfers will ruin your program in less than 7 months!

1-6 after what should have been a top 4 finish last year. Mind blowing stuff.

Let’s remember that come transfer portal season… don’t be Clemson, but dang don’t be Florida State.
Culture of a program is a real thing. Hard to build that in this new era with that many new faces every time the portal opens.

I believe their QB play early in the season tanked them. DJ U sucked at Clemson, sucked at WS and really sucked at FSU.

Never really understood how guys like that keep getting chances to start.

The resignation of Bennett at Virginia probably gives Hamilton and Florida State a better chance to win the ACC.

My dad in his final days got real simple in his thinking. Not dementia, not exactly, but for instance: every mechanical problem, with his riding mower, his truck (which he could no longer drive on the street), mom's car, whatever, it was a battery problem. No matter the symptoms: it was the battery at fault. It was endearing, but usually wrong.

A college football team, with 11 coaches, who knows how many other not-officially-coaches-called-assistants, and 105 players, is a hugely complicated machine. Hundreds of things that could each on their own go partially or totally off whack, and which could as they interact with each other in the billions of possible combinations, also cause problems.

Let's don't always try to bring it down to one particular coach or one particular player (normally the QB). Sure, they could be contributing to the issue, but you don't melt down spectactularly as FSU has, and it be one player.

I’m not so sure that Dabo didn’t fool us all by doing things the way he’s doing it. I like taking a few portal players to fill holes but tough to argue when Clemson is in the top 10, we aren’t and Florida State is 1-6

Hasn’t our portal behavior been similar to Ole Miss?
No, nothing alike! Ole Miss. They took in 23 transfers this past offseason and had the #2 transfer ranked class.

On the other hand we took in 8 transfers and were ranked 36th. This is in line with previous Heupel transfer classes. We usually take 8-10 guys and end up in the 30th+ rankings.

Thanks for the breakdown. Had no idea they took that many

I accidently looked at the 2023 classes, but its a similar story in the 2024 class.

Ole Miss had the #1 rated transfer class with 25 transfers.

Tennessee had the #31ranked transfer class with 9 transfers.

So yes, they rely on transfers alot more for their premium talent. Tennessee recruits better HS players, intends on developing them into starters, and the after examining the roster, fills the gaps with transfers.

At the end of the day, Dabo is still recruiting on a much higher level than any other team in the ACC Sure Miami has had two really good classes and Florida State also supposedly has good talent on paper. But outside of those two teams, who still haven't recruited on the same level over a 4 year span, there is a huge talent gap with the rest of the conference.

So, yes, it makes sense for Clemson to still roll through the ACC. This should be expected. They really only have to be able to beat Miami. Everyone else they should beat habdindly and they have. But it's when they go up against similarly talented teams that it becomes clear, Clemson had no shot in the first place. They aren't beating the Georgia's and Texas, and Oregon's and Ohio State's. Those teams recruit better than Clemson and hit the portal if need be. Clemson is surrendering the advantage. But cool, they can be ACC champs..

Considering the QB touches the ball every offensive down, I would say his play effects a lot more than say a weaker DL. The OL could develop the perfect pocket, the WR could be running free in space, everything could go perfect and the QB throws it to a linebacker and the Offense will suck.

If the right tackle wiffs on a block, the QB can still run or get rid of the ball before he gets hit, that situation has a backup plan. Throwing terrible passes or making bad reads on the mesh has zero backup plans.

Bad offense puts your defense in terrible situations. Kind of like if your punter averages 10 yards per punt, you would be hosed.

Go back and watch Clemsons' offense, watch WS offense with him at QB, you will see the same issues FSU had when he plays......common denominator.

Occams razor: the simplest explanation is usually the correct one.
