What do you think will happen with Bowden? and do you think Jimbo Fisher is the guy who will take them back to the top of the ACC?

I think Bowden decides to retire this week.

I don't get why they gave Jimbo the HC in waiting title, I don't think he is the guy. FSU could get some top tier coach, but they settle on Jimbo? Doens't make sense to me.

Fisher will get it, but it will probably continue to be more of the same in Tallahassee.

The other side of that argument is that I don't see the ACC getting significantly better any time soon, and Florida State still has the best collection of local HS talent to pick from in the conference.

from what is said to be a reliable source..

"The decision to be head coach next year is no longer in Bowden's hands. His "soul searching" line may have some truth to it, but he won't be deciding whether to come back next year as the head coach. The wheels were set in motion after the USF loss and they really started to burn after the Boston College loss and the circus-like atmosphere on the sideline.
I heard that he came into the post-game press conference and had obviously been crying. He then asked the reporters not to ask him any questions about his future. I am told that request was highly unusual.
I had been told that an announcement would come on December 4th regarding Bowden's future. That's the day before the SEC Championship game. But now I would not be surprised if there was a press conference early this week with Bowden, Wetherell (FSU President), AD Spetman, and Jimbo Fisher (the head coach in waiting).
If Bowden is at Florida State next year, it will not be as head coach. He is going out on his terms- the terms he dictated to the university over the last decade. Remember that Bowden is due $1M when he retires, per a clause in his contract. I believe Florida State will offer him additional funds to act as a program representative, most likely accompanying Fisher on a final booster tour. Some believe that Bowden still has the capability to make Florida State a lot of money. My guess is that Bowden will receive somewhere in the neighborhood of $3.5Million, a number including the $1Million that he is currently guaranteed per contract. Of course, one reason to pay Bowden is so that he will keep his mouth shut and not make disparaging comments about Florida State.
I think you could compare this role to that of Wooden at UCLA. I am not sure if Bowden will roam the sidelines next year, even in a ceremonial capacity, but I am told that Bowden will not be making any football decisions for Florida State in 2010. And as reported here from day one, Bowden will have zero input on the defensive coordinator hire.
This agreement allows Bowden to save face. It won't appear that he was fired, but that he made the decision to step down. It also allows him to provide for his family, which really needs the money. This would also allow him to continue "working", and everyone familiar with the situation knows that Bowden is a firm believer that he will die upon retiring. Finally, this would allow Bowden to act as if he really cares about Florida State. That is, if he is smart enough to take the money..."

Fisher is basicaly the coach now anyway just without the title. Bowden is a figure head.

Wounded Mullet I think is basically right.

My prediction:

Bowden stays one more year as head coach, but its in title only. Jimbo has even more control than he had before.

But I don't see that program getting back to national prominence any time soon. They are so far behind Florida right now and don't really show signs of much. If Meyer and Charlie Strong remain at Florida, reality is that they can have any recruit they want coming out of the state.

He isn't catching Paterno, no reason for him to stay any longer. I'd say he's gone.

LG, FSU had what appear to be good recruiting classes in 08 and 09. Is there not enough in the cupboard for the next guy to work with?

As far as the state of Florida goes, it looks like Miami is the ACC team on the rise. Great class 2 years ago. Solid class last year and this year. Basically, a weird lateral and a coverage gaffe in OT from being 11-1.

LG, ya'll got the $6 million a year ready to match ND's offer? May have to close the med school to come up with the dough, but it's probably worth it.

FSU is getting its fair share of talent if you want to be a perennial bowl team and an every now and again ACC contender, but they are way behind Florida. And as you point out Miami is back on the scene and basically getting anybody they want out of Broward and Dade Counties, which is huge.

Miami will be talked about in BCS terms I think long before FSU is. FSU is an interesting job, though. With someone truly charismatic to bring in just a few more guys, particularly on defense, they might be able to get the ball rolling. Not sure Jimbo is that guy, honestly. Hate to say it but Richt might be the better for for what they need right now. They basically need a Kiffin to help get some energy back.

As for Meyer, I don't know. On the one hand, he seems to truly be happy at UF and what a gold mine of talent and support he has there. On the other hand, you wonder if there isn't a combination of wanting to leave UF at the very top of the heap along with the challenge of making Notre Dame competitive again. It wouldn't shock me if he left.

I'd be surprised if Meyer leaves but I do think you'll have to give him a raise. I assume that Fisher will be the man at FSU for at least couple of seasons but I think that thier program would do well to shop around. It seems like there might be some variance between the kind of coach that they need to attract the in-state talent and the kind of coach that their boosters want.
