Florida voter purge: Florida sues Obama administration over voter purge - OrlandoSentinel.com

Wow ! The GOP is pursuing this process, despite the fact that it is sweeping up legal voters in its purge, and despite the fact that it is a clear violation of law because it will occur within 90 days of the election.

And, there is no evidence of any significant voter fraud to justify it in the first place. This will not end well for the GOP in this state as they just insist on antagnozing the Hispanic community. f I were Romney, I'd be all over Florida officials to cut this crap out because it is going to give Obama tremendous ammunition in Florida.

Read the whole thing. Didn't find any spot where Florida admitted to "purging legal voters."

It's on thing to be a hack, LG. It's another to be completely shameless about it.

1) They found evidence of illegal immigrants voting--that would seem to indicate some level of voter fraud to me.
2) They found some number of legal U.S. citizens on the list that came from a review of the driver license database. That would indicate they have sufficient checks and balances in the system.
3) In my view the State of Florida has the responsibility to ensure that their registration roles are complete and up to date prior to every election. They have the obligation to clean up the database of those who have died, moved, been convicted of felonies or were otherwise registered improperly.
4) This is a State issue, why is the Federal Government involved?

I find it interesting how many on here argued that the Obama Administration would be "setting a dangerous precedent" in choosing not to enforce the DOMA Legislation. The point was made by many that regardless of Obama's personal stance, that the Executive must enforce the laws enacted by Congress.

So, here we are with the Executive enforcing the laws enacted by Congress.

That's not what I'm seeing. The Feds are trying to avoid turning over information by claiming that Florida hasn't proven that they should have access. They don't want to turn it over, and they get to decide (barring a lawsuit) when the standard for access is met. They aren't enforcing the law; they are avoiding compliance with the law.

GOP supervisors of election are refusing to enforce the edict from the GOP governor citing it as illegal and that it is including legal voters !

The State of Florida rewrote their election laws in 2011; the District Court in D.C. has not cleared those laws. Without that clearance, the State of Florida cannot move forward with their purge in the counties that are covered by the VRA. The DOJ is enforcing the law.

Why would the DOJ provide the information that Florida requires to continue with their purge that has not been cleared?

According to the article, they already removed several illegal voters and rejected the legal ones. I'm pretty sure that's exactly what the law is supposed to accomplish.

Local Election Officials Resist Florida’s Efforts to Purge Voter Rolls | Government / Elections / Politics | FRONTLINE | PBS

The move, led by Republican Gov. Rick Scott, has caused an outcry among watchdog groups, and a rebuke from the Justice Department, which is charged with monitoring voter law nationwide.
But local election supervisors, about half of whom are Republican, have also balked, refusing to continue a purge that one suggested might be illegal.
In May, Florida’s secretary of state sent election supervisors a list of some 2,600 names that it said were non-citizens and should be removed from the voter rolls.
But upon examining the list, election supervisors found names of U.S. citizens, according to Vicki Davis, the elected president of the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections. “We had been told this list was a really clean list with which to work,” Davis, who is also a Republican, said.

.........

Ann McFall, the Republican election supervisor for Volusia County, said the voter rolls were already carefully purged in 2011, well before the election. “Then this late-breaking, non-emergency, non-citizen issue has come before us within the 90-day time period. It just didn’t pass the smell test,” she said. She added, “I think I’d be breaking the law if I continued the purge.”
Why another purge now? “It’s close,” McCall said, referring to the upcoming presidential election. “It’s not that there’s fraud there. It’s not that mistakes happen. It’s just that it’s so close.”
