Looking to get into fly fishing and was curious if anyone here had any experience with it. If so, where have you found to be good spots within a couple hours of Knoxville? Not looking for your honey hole, just wondering where I should be fishing for trout in the area. Also, looking for gear recommendations, as I have just been borrowing friends gear. Thanks.

I'm personally a fan on the Clinch. There's some BIG trout up there but tailwater fishing is a whole different animal than, say, mountain stream fishing. To get up and running grab a couple beers (or whatever is your beverage of choice) and cruise around in this forum for awhile.

I hate to give up some of our old spots, but I don't get there much anymore. Doe river, south fork Holston below dam, nolichucky north of erwin, Tellico river, and citico creek are all pretty good.

Streamers with a 4 inch sinking line are the best bet, but floating terrestrials are a lot more fun.

Haven't been much since I moved do to time but going to make an effort to get out on the kayak a lot more frequently

Don't overlook smallmouth on the fly either

Oh.

So you were actually talking about catching smallmouth bass while fly fishing? I had totally read that as a bawdy joke.

What areas of the Caney Fork? Fish from bank or in shallow water or need to float? Generating or not? Catch many browns?
I fish from a Nucanoe. Put in at the dam and take out at happy hallow. There are good size brown and rainbows. Some tiny brooks too.
There are plenty of places to wade in but I’ve never done that. When generation is going it can be a fast drift.

seems he was at first. smallies usually feed off bottom with shape of their mouth. they are very aggressive, and will chase after a crayfish, minnow, or sculpin. midday summer those eyes look upward for **** falling off trees, small rodents, junebugs...protein.

other than my own creation. my all time fav smallmoutb fly is the meatwhistle. ring the dinner bell. like a pig and jig.

Go to Tremont Institute outside of Townsend. Instead of turning left into the institute keep going straight, the paved road will end and you have a couple of miles of road close to the stream. All good there 1 hour from Knoxville.
