...to a point.

Yea, Kiffin screwed us by leaving, but had he stayed he would have brought us back to the top pretty quickly--and it's worth looking at why.

First, he hired an absolutely kick-ass staff with two or three kick-ass recruiters--including at least one who knew and worked florida. He made hiring a great staff a major priority.

Second, he was brash--I liked it. He made it clear that the Vols were a Big Dog, that we were coming-- and that everybody better get on board with that idea or be left behind. He created the impression that we were back before we were back--smart.

Now, it's possible that he would have gotten us into a bit of trouble with the NCAA; in fact, I think he did(!), so Jones's job is to emulate the above without crossing the line.

Act like we are back already. Hire some stud coaches--we'd better spend the money. If he hires a mediocre staff, we'll be back on the "coaching rumors and speculation board" again in two years.

Kiffin will be lucky to keep his current job. He would have failed at UT had he stayed. I'm with you on the confidence issue, but you lost me with the rest. It's a long way back and you don't cover that ground with talk, its going to take a lot of work.

Yes, Kiffin would have taken us to the top. THE TOP of the NCAA infractions committee!!!!!

We got extremely lucky in 2009.

(1) Kiffin left before he could get us on probation

(2) We did not hire Brian Kelly. Had we hired Kelly, he would have stayed at U.T. for less than 12 months, then left for "his dream job" Notre Dame.

Either of those situations or both of those situations would have put us in real trouble....
