Yea, Kiffin screwed us by leaving, but had he stayed he would have brought us back to the top pretty quickly--and it's worth looking at why.
First, he hired an absolutely kick-ass staff with two or three kick-ass recruiters--including at least one who knew and worked florida. He made hiring a great staff a major priority.
Second, he was brash--I liked it. He made it clear that the Vols were a Big Dog, that we were coming-- and that everybody better get on board with that idea or be left behind. He created the impression that we were back before we were back--smart.
Now, it's possible that he would have gotten us into a bit of trouble with the NCAA; in fact, I think he did(!), so Jones's job is to emulate the above without crossing the line.
Act like we are back already. Hire some stud coaches--we'd better spend the money. If he hires a mediocre staff, we'll be back on the "coaching rumors and speculation board" again in two years.
