Well, I promised hatvol96 last week that I would post some information.
There is some damn good food in this town, especially seafood. Mike Andersons, Phil's Oyster Bar, Drusilla Seafood, and Ralph & Kacoos are the most popular seafood restaurants. All will be crowded on game weekends but you can get in with a reasonable wait, they are used to it.
T.J. Ribs is especialy good at moving a crowd through on game day and serves fine BBQ. Good Bar & Grills abound. The Chimes, The Pastime, Georges, Walk-Ons, Ivars, and Brewbachers are all great LSU sports bars with excellent food. Juban's is kind of upscale but has the best Louisiana cuisine. Gino's or Ruffinos for Italian. Ninfa's, Serrano's or Superior Grill for Mexican. Serops or Arzi's for Lebanese.
And don't forget 24-hour breakfast at Louie's Cafe, a classic diner with the best omelettes and burgers in town.
Live Music can be heard at The Caterie, The Varsity Theatre, and Chelsea's all near campus. The casino riverboats downtown offer some fun, especially since New Orleans is not open. N.O. is ordinarily a major stop for visitors to Baton Rouge since it is only an hour away.
As far as sightseeing in BR try:
1. Old State Capitol-- Mark Twain hated it.
2. New State Capitol, Old Arsenal and Pentagon Barracks -- Huey Long's skyscraper and nearby 19th century museums.
3. USS Kidd -- WWII destroyer nicely restored on the levee downtown.
4. LSU Rural Life Museum -- highly rated, not on campus
5. Magnolia Mound Plantation -- near LSU, colonial-era raised cottage
6. Nottaway Plantation -- across the river, antebellum-era Greek Revival mansion
7. Port Hudson Battlefield Park -- major Civil war battlefield with best-preserved entrenchments of any park.
Don't believe the stories you've heard about bad fan behavior, most of it is BS. Come looking for a good time and you will find it. Tailgaiting is legendary around Tiger Stadium. You will hear the "Tigerbait" taunt about 600 times! It's a friendly taunt meant to annoy you . . . it's not a threat. We don't actually feed people to the Tiger. It's like the Tennessee band playing "Rocky Top" over and over and over . . .
There is a large high-crime neighborhood to the north of campus. It might be wise to avoid this area.
