I'd rather listen to the radio with no television at home than sit 50 yard line in Neyland stadium. He was able to call a game like none other. I grew up listening to him. My dad would mute the TV and turn on the radio so we could hear him announce as we watched Heath Shuler, Andy Kelly, and Peyton. He made Tennessee football what it was to so many fans like myself. For you that we're too young to enjoy him you should check out the ONLY good song Kenny Chesney made... It happened to be one of my all time favorites.

I hate to say this but I bought PPV last week. Mike Keith and Pat Ryan were the TV announcers. It was the best called game since John Ward's retirement.

John Ward was the best.

I have told this before, but we sat with him at a TN Fund (then VASF) function. When we approached the table, he stood up, put his hand out and introduced himself. What a humble gentleman he is. We then got to enjoy his stories of Bernard King, Stu Aberdeen and Cawood Ledford, whom he called one of his best friends. What a great day that was.
John Ward, not one of the best, THE BEST!

I agree 100%. The man was the best at what he did.
The other day I watched The Miracle at South Bend with him calling. It was great to watch it while listening to him, there is nobody like John.

But if you mute the TV how can you hear all the great things ESPN has to say about Alabama and Ohio State.

Totally agree. ESPN is totally biased in favor of the Big 10/11/12 (whatever..) and the PAC 10. I think producers literally had a crush on Pete Carroll. It is sickening. Were it not for the SEC's domination of college football since the late 90's, ESPN would have nothing much to do with us. With their sports monopoly, its all about the benjamins - so they cover the most popular conference in America.

All of us posting about John is a witness to how revered he was as the voice of the Vols. An absolute legend. His calls stay in your memory. The only one available around then that could have built a reasonably good legacy of it had he been selected is Mike Keith. But they messed that up as well. Ever since Joe Johnson retired things headed downhill in the AD. Hopefully that is changing and started back the right direction.
