For those of y'all that would know, how bad does it usually snow in East Tennessee in early December?

Not a lot of snow comes to East Tennessee in December, most snows in the valley are February and March, need cold air from the north and the moisture coming up from the gulf to get a snow maker in East Tennessee, a December snow in East Tennessee is usually a dusting to a couple of inches, usually confined to the highe elevations.

The problem when it does snow is that people can’t drive in it, there isn’t enough equipment to quickly remove it, and the roads aren’t flat.

Yes...Siri told me it would be down to 27 and snowing next Saturday in Knoxville...And since I don't live in or frequent that area much, I'd like to know what kinda snow we're talkin' about.

How warm it is in the days before makes a big difference. If it snows after not getting above freezing for several days prior it can get really slick. The January 1982 ice storm was epic. The city was shut down for about 24 hours after all of the streets were turned into skating rinks.

I don’t live there any more, and life is full of surprises, but I would guess a light dusting at best. Check the predicted high for that same day (and the day before.) If it is above freezing, it’s very likely that the snow will just be an in-the-air thing and melt as soon as it hits the ground. If it’s been below freezing, and especially if the snow is preceded by freezing rain, you may be looking at black ice conditions, which are Interesting.

But really, if the temps have been above freezing for preceding days, it’s much less likely that any snow would stick.

Load up on milk, bread, beer, and diapers (the four essentials for Knoxville snow survival), and you’ll be fine. Happy travels! ❄️

I think that toilet paper has made it onto the panic buying grocery store lists.

Probably so, but that’s the magic of the Original Four: diapers can double for TP, paper towels, bandages, dustcloths, you name it. Covid-related panic buying is a different thang.

It depends on what you mean. In terms of accumulation, not much. In terms of hysteria, plenty. When there is snow in the forecast, there will be runs on groceries. If there is any snow on the roads, people will drive like brimstone is falling from the sky. Bands of rednecks will deploy, in big trucks, to pull people from ditches with the tow chains they keep for just that purpose. It's the most polite form of anarchy the world will ever know.
