Let it go. The man used UT as a bargaining chip the last couple of times; not to mention the fact he let rumors of this latest go around go on for weeks before stating his interests.

The man is a better analyst than coach. He was mediocre in the NFL sans a couple of years. While he did build the Raiders and coach a Dungy built Tampa Bay team in the SB; he did nothing much after that.

He would have been a rock star by name and Knoxville would be more of a media circus than a football haven.
Nobody really knows if he would have had true success in the SEC.

I think that Butch Jones may be an inside the park home run hire. You dont have to be a flashy name (see Phil Fulmer in 92) to win championships. I say give the guy a chance and see how he does in year 2/3 before we run him out of town.

I am in no way stating Butch Jones should be given the keys to Knoxville, but at least give him praise for his enthusiasm. His energy level seems to be leaps and bounds from what Dooley portrayed.

I still see grumblings here and there

Take if from someone who wanted to see Gruden here: This is a dead story. I don't know who you claim is still grumbling about this, but creating a thread on this now defies logic. The coaching search is over and everyone is moving on...

I wanted him to come here. I think he wouldve been a hell of a recruiter and while I dont think he wouldve been the greatest college coach of all time, I do think he wouldve been a good one. That being said, after hearing his name nonstop it seems like ever since Fulmer's days were numbered.. Im over Jon Gruden.

I like the guy we have so far and Ill support him until its obvious hes not the man for the job.

First if all nobody's talking about him anymore. Secondly he would have been a much better hire if he would've wanted the job. Not saying he's a better coach(although he has won a superbowl) but no way to argue he'd be a rockstar on the recruiting trail. On an unrelated note...does he just annoy the hell out of anyone else since he turned us down. I used to like listening to him but now it just gets under my skin how he's so over the top with everything

Anyone who doesn't think Gruden was in play, and anyone who doesn't think Gruden was THE homerun hire at Tennessee is smoking far too much crack from their seedy crack-pipe.

Most of us who were all-in on Gruden are getting behind CBJ. I am. BUT let's not kid ourselves. If Gruden were the HC right now, we would have at least three 5* recruits.

I don't care if he can't coach a lick (he can). The man could get Saban-talent to Tennessee, and that is 90% of the battle.

(PS - we are all still waiting for the REAL Gruden story)

Why this again? I never wanted Grud at the very least I thought people thinking he would come here were delusional. I also never wanted CBJ. I wanted a coach with big name and proven winner at the highest level. But I am not the AD.
Call me crazy but if I was the AD and could not get a hire with real star power I would have kept Chainey as HC with a two year contract with a buy clause after year one, I would have kept OL coach, RB coach, S&C coach and took big money and found the best DC money could buy. Then see how it goes for next year all the while looking for a star of a coach to become available.

Like the one where he turned down the VOLS 3 straight times? What is there to tell other than he played UT?
