I saw this too. If things like this keep up we'll see Congressional investigations on all of this as well. I wonder if Mack has people behind the scenes raising hell on all of this just to stir things up.

Lienert was suspended by the NCAA for doing a TV spot for ESPN. USC petitioned for his reinstatement saying that it was inadvertent. (How you can inadvertently do a TV commercial for someone is beyond me.) The NCAA reinstated him. As his punishment USC is not letting him participate in team media events until after Christmas.

Matt Leinart's appearance in a promotional spot for ESPN violated an NCAA rule, but the USC quarterback had his eligibility restored Tuesday, an NCAA spokesman told the Los Angeles Times.

USC declared Leinart ineligible this month after the spot -- a "SportsCenter is next" promo that was taped after the Trojans' Dec. 3 victory over UCLA -- aired on ESPN. The Trojans reported the violation to the NCAA and petitioned for Leinart's reinstatement.

"Whenever we are aware that media outlets ask student-athletes to do these kinds of tags, we immediately cut them off," Tim Tessalone, USC's sports information director, told the Times. "Unfortunately, this one slipped by."

According to the NCAA's Kent Barrett, Leinart's actions were "unintentional and inadvertent. This was the type of thing where it was obvious the student-athlete was not attempting to become an endorser of a network."

Leinart, who finished third in this year's Heisman Trophy balloting and won the award last year, has practiced three times in preparation for the Jan. 4 Rose Bowl against Texas.

Barrett told the Times athletes may take part in practice and team and school activities while reinstatement petitions are considered by the NCAA. Leinart's situation came to light when USC's sports information staff turned down post-practice interview requests for the senior, who is made available to the media only on Tuesdays.

Tessalone said Leinart had been barred by USC from participating in media activities until after Christmas.

Maybe this is not that big of a deal but it begs the question, why have the rule in the first place? I really wonder if this had been some kid at UAB or somewhere who did a TV spot asking viewers to tune in to a certain sports cast on Birmingham News if it would have been handled the same way. We all know that big money is involved in the BCS and the Rose Bowl is the big kahuna this year. It just creates the impression of impropriety and favoritism for this to slide by. The NCAA is cutting its own throat. Heck, there are already a couple of schools considering disassociated from the NCAA becasue of the Native American mascot situation.

ABC, BCS, ESPN....all step brothers of one another, and who is the NCAA to come in and start talking about rules violations....

in reality, it isn't that big of a deal, but the fact that this is the guy in the Rose Bowl, which is on ABC, who owns ESPN....well, it just smells...and these days, where there's smoke, there's a full blown volcano going on underneath......why even give the opportunity to have the slightest hint of favoritisim?

it was stupid of the ESPN folks to ask...whoever made that request of Matt, should be fired...what a dummy.

Who cares about some X-Games stooge? Schools suspend guys, then get them reinstated regarding these type of minor violations all the time. This gets publicized because it's a slow time for news now. Just more SC player hating on this board.

That may be true, but the facts are all he did was an eight second promo for Sportscenter. If there was any substance to the "violation" I would have a different opinion.

i am not saying he deserves to be punished. but the ncaa is known for a zero tolerance policy. they have banned ppl for alot less than this.

Yeah I read this and the inside sources are saying that Coach Fullmer was the one that turned it in to the NCAA! I here Texas is next on Fullmer's and NCAA's list to bring down. Yeah the NCAA is looking the other way on some Tennessee discrepancies if Fullmer gives them dirt on USC and Texas.

Bush mingling with agents, Leinart doing promo's... what is tomorrow's story about USC going to be?

Texas should be hope Leinart and Bush are declared ineligible.

They won't be. It would create another fiasco, like a split national title or something because Texas wouldn't be playing USC at even close to full strength.

Has anybody here seen these promos? They're just taped after a game, during an interview. It's not that big of a deal. I would put it past even the NCAA to ban Leinart for doing that spot.

with all these distractions with commercials, agents, reinstatement, etc i'm thinking USC is getting primed for an upset. they are talking more about their elgibility then they are about texas. thats not good.
