It is ignorant to think we are the only intelligent beings in the universe. There is definitely something else out there....somewhere.

Well the thought of a civilization out there that can directly harvest energy from a star is frightening, to say the least (even though this whole scenario is unlikely). A civilization that advanced would be able to glass this planet at will, most likely.

There is a fascinating theory for this called the Kardashev Scale. Interesting stuff.

If you think about humanity's relative youth on Earth, intelligent life in the universe, if it exists, is likely to be millions of years more advanced than us. Advanced to the point where the things they're capable of may be completely incomprehensible to us. It would be like putting a caveman on the International Space Station or in a helicopter flying over NYC at night.

My theory is that intelligent life either always ends up destroying itself or somehow "goes dark" by merging with a super AI/becoming completely immersed in a hyper-realistic simulation of the universe (which we may already be living in).

It just seems like intelligent life would have the means of creating a simulation of the universe, complete with the ability to bend physics and natural laws (Matrix style), much faster than it would have the means of exploring the real universe.

I'm as stout by the book Christian as they come and I agree with this. Maybe not "definitely" but I'd say a really good chance. Nothing in the Bible that says we are the only one in this universe so I cant believe G picked this little rock in an obscure solar system to put the only free thinking living bodies.

Even taking the religious aspect out, there's no way that we just happened to occur. Then not only were we created but then all the animals with very similar body set ups (heart, lungs, skin, etc...) yet are different . And then throw in all the plants with a completely different set up. All of this on an obscure rock. Sorry but I don't buy it that we're the only one.

I hope I get to see it in my lifetime when we finally make contact with another species. I doubt it will happen but it sure will be epic

"November 16, 1974 is when the*Arecibo Radio Telescope in Puerto Rico beamed the first powerful radio signal into space. Considering that radio waves travel at lightspeed in a vacuum and if there are any aliens around*KIC 8462852, we can expect them to pick up our signal in roughly 1440 years."

Space is so large and billions of galaxies it's hard to fathom. No doubt other intelligence is out there.

What if the universe were closed and what we are looking at is a satellite developed by humans in the future but we can see it now? Maybe our future selves are playing a joke on us to rattle us up in the past. Who knows!

Penn State, huh? Its probably just Jerry Sandusky using the telescopes to spy on children and misidentifying their bedrooms as alien life.

it is a Death Star and now it knows where we are at

If it turns out this object is alien and it's harvesting energy from a star you can bet hard money they already know we're here. This isn't today's news either. This thing was flagged by Kepler going back to 2009.

damn coug, that means they have sent a death star years ago then

to be honest,I don't get all the aliens will be peace loving and wanting to help us out crap, they could be the ones that kicked the other aliens ass and looking for a good planet to harvest

minerals or body parts :) who knows ?

Other interesting element is that this star is roughly 1440 light years away from Earth. If it did end up being alien, we're seeing the evidence of it from that long ago. Who knows how much it would have evolved since then?
