Praying for his family. If this ever happens to you, it is best to let the current take you and save your energy until the current lets you go. I have heard.

This isn't true. If you get caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore. You can swim out of one in about 30 seconds. People freak out and try to swim to shore, tiring them out and eventually drowning them.

Presumably, he made a bad decision that led to his death.
Unfortunate, sad situation either way.
