One of the former Black Nationalist activists who shot and killed a New Jersey State Trooper in one of the state’s most infamous homicides was paroled Tuesday.

The New Jersey state Supreme Court granted parole to Sundiata Acoli nearly 50 years after the radical Black Liberation Army activist shot and killed New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster during a traffic stop near New Brunswick. The Court ruled, 3-2, to overrule a parole board decision denying Acoli parole, The New York Times reported.

On May 2, 1973, Sundiata Acoli and fellow members of the Black Liberation Army, James Costan and Joanne Chesimard (also known as Assata Shakur), were driving along the New Jersey Turnpike when they were pulled over by Trooper James Harper. Trooper Foerster, a German immigrant who had been serving as a State Trooper for less than three years, arrived as Harper’s backup.

I noticed where the SPLC doesn't have a category for Black Nationalism and Black Supremacy. They moved it under the category General Hate recently.

This is the one that’s Tupac’s aunt right?

Tupac's aunt is America's most wanted female terrorist

In 1979, Joanne Chesimard, a member of the Black Liberation Army (BLA), escaped from the US prison where she was serving a life sentence for the murder in 1973 of a New Jersey state trooper.

Also known as Assata Shakur, Chesimard is aunt to the late hip-hop star Tupac Shakur. In 2000, another rapper, Common, released “A Song for Assata” after meeting her in Havana; the song became controversial when Michelle Obama invited him to a White House event in 2011.

Joanne Chesimard, also known as Assata Shakur, broke out of New Jersey prison in 1979 and fled to the communist island

Cuban officials on Friday said that Joanne Chesimard, who was convicted of killing a New Jersey state trooper, has died in Havana decades after breaking out of prison and escaping to the communist island.

Cuba's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Chesimard, who was born JoAnne Deborah Byron and was also known as Assata Olugbala Shakur, passed away after living there for years under asylum granted by the Cuban government.

"On September 25, 2025, American citizen Joanne Deborah Byron, ‘Assata Shakur,’ passed away in Havana, Cuba, due to health conditions and advanced age," the ministry's statement said.

In 1977, Chesimard was convicted of the murder of state trooper Werner Foerster, who left behind a wife and 3-year-old son, during a shootout on the New Jersey Turnpike in 1973. She escaped from prison in 1979 and had been wanted by the FBI ever since. She was a member of the Black Liberation Army, which the FBI describes as "one of the most violent militant organizations of the 1970s."

On May 2, 2019, the 46th anniversary of Foerster’s slaying, New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal called Shakur "a domestic terrorist and nothing more."

The leftist Chicago Teachers Union is honoring the life of a woman convicted of killing a police officer in the 1970s.

In a social media post on Friday, the union shared an image of Assata Shakur, who was born as Joanne Deborah Chesimard, calling her a “revolutionary fighter.”

“Rest in Power, Rest in Peace, Assata Shakur. Today we honor the life and legacy of a revolutionary fighter, a fierce writer, a revered elder of Black liberation, and a leader of freedom whose spirit continues to live in our struggle,” the organization said.

“Assata refused to be silenced. She taught us that ‘It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win. We must love each other and support each other. We have nothing to lose but our chains,'” the post reads:

Shakur, who was on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) list of “most wanted” terrorists,” died Thursday in Havana, Cuba, due to health issues and her “advanced age,” the Associated Press (AP) reported.

During a traffic stop in 1973, she and two other people were involved in a shootout with New Jersey State Police troopers, leaving one officer, Werner Foerster, dead and another officer wounded. Foerster was shot execution style during the violent incident.
