Congratulations to Jajuan Smith on joining the Catholic High School coaching staff per today's News Sentinel.

He was on the Tennessee squad when Pearl replaced Peterson.
More than just on the squad He was a vital starter, maybe even all-SEC player on a #1 ranked team in the country that won SEC Championships and made the NCAA Tournament, 4 years in a row

My bad, honorable mention all-SEC in 2008. Voted SEC "Best off the Bench", one year by The Tennessean, also. Pretty impressive for a preferred walk-on from McMinn County. Best of luck to JaJuan at Catholic, except when they play Fulton

Didn't he miss one, also. Even Pearl benched him for that one, iIrc

It might have been versus Texas in December 2006. IIRC it was against a high profile out of conference opponent. TN had maybe a 3 point lead with just about 10-15 seconds left. JaJuan stole the ball and had a break away that would gave iced the game. He decided to try passing it to himself off of the backboard for a spectacular dunk. He missed it and Texas(?) had one more shot to tie the game. Pearl was furious and came well onto the court screaming at JaJuan. One of the dumbest plays I’ve ever seen but JS lucked out as it didn’t cost TN the game.

That Smith and Lofton combo was one of the best off all-time imo. Both were very good 3 point and free throw shooters. We know all the accolades Lofton received but Smith was a SEC All-Defensive selection in 2007-08 also. Very easily could have been All-SEC over several players that were on teams with only 5 conference wins.

JS could be absolutely lights out from beyond the three point line at times. I’ll never forget how he absolutely went off in the second half of the game at Florida his senior season. Nice come from behind win that I believe secured the SEC regular season crown.

Tennessee was up by three and he tried it with only a few seconds left against South Carolina. It bounced back to like halfcourt, and if memory serves, South Carolina was able to throw up a half court or three quarters court shot at the end.

When he was on from the three and Chris Lofton doing his thing it was lights out,the party was over.
