The Memphis Showboats selected former Tennessee offensive lineman Jerome Carvin with the No. 43 overall pick in the 2023 USFL college draft on Tuesday.
Carvin signed with Tennessee as a consensus four-star prospect out of Cordova, Tennessee in the class of 2018. He was the No. 26 offensive tackle and No. 11 player in the state of Tennessee, according to the 247Sports consensus.

Carvin played five seasons with the Vols, appearing in over 60 games and making 43 starts. He allowed one sack over his final two seasons with the Vols.
He earned SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week honors in 2022 against UT Martin. Carvin was selected to participate in the East-West Shrine Bowl this offseason.

I wish the USFL would make teams entirely consisting of players from one school, or at least from only a single conference. It would make it way better. I have no desire to watch players from my team lined up with players from the PAC or AAC.

This is pretty shocking. Carvin is nowhere near a top OL talent but he couldn’t even get in as an UDFA???

Right? The article says he’s given up 2 sacks total the last 2 seasons. In the SEC. A guy like that can’t find his way onto an NFL roster? Even as an UDFA? Weird.

I could be WAY off (and I haven't bothered to go check), but I thought the USFL had a sort of "development" type agreement with the NFL. Not really a minor league, but guys could void their USFL contracts for NFL deals. I also think NFL teams could place a few guys on rosters or something like that. Anyways, for fringe guys, it may be viewed as a better route into the league as opposed to being bounced around from practice squad to practice squad with no playing time. At least with the USFL you get another year of game tape for teams to see.
