Walker Makes It 14 Straight Super Bowl Appearances for Former Vols
Manning and Witten to play in Pro Bowl
Jan. 24, 2005
When the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship game to advance to Super Bowl XXXIX, former University of Tennessee defensive tackle Darwin Walker extended the streak of former Vols appearing in a Super Bowl to 14 consecutive years.
The streak extends back to Super Bowl XXVI in 1992 when offensive guard Raleigh McKenzie played for the Washington Redskins. In fact, there has been a former Vol to appear in 17 of the last 18 Super Bowls.
A total of 24 former Volunteers have been on the Super Bowl roster over the last 14 years led by defensive back and special teamer Bill Bates who made three appearances with the Dallas Cowboys.
Walker started all 16 regular season games and both playoff contests at right defensive tackle and both right and left defensive end positions. He recorded 46 total tackles during the regular season with 4.5 sacks and team-high 16 quarterback hurries.
The Super Bowl, pitting the New England Patriots against the Eagles, will be held at Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla., Feb. 6 at 6:30 p.m. ET on FOX.
In addition, Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts was named the starting quarterback for the AFC in the Pro Bowl, while Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten was selected to his first Pro Bowl.
Manning, the NFL Player of the Year, threw a record 49 touchdown passes with a career-best 4,557 yards. He has ammassed nearly 30,000 passing yards (29,442) in just seven NFL seasons and has 216 touchdown strikes. He has thrown for more than 4,000 yards in each of the last six seasons.
Witten's selection comes in his second season when he made 87 catches for 980 yards with six touchdowns.
The 2005 NFL Pro Bowl is Sunday, Feb. 13 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu.
