The reporter from the Memphis Commercial Appeal was on rivals radio this morning, and said that Smith is "Jealous" of the atmosphere at places like Tennessee and wants that for Memphis Football. Good luck.

Jealous now that his son is on the team. Not saying Fred and FedEx don't already give a LOT to the city and university but it is no coincidence this is coming as his son is on the roster.

I seriously doubt Fred Smith is jealous of anything.

If this really is about his son playing on the team, then he should have started about five years ago. Upgrade the facilities, bring in the right coach, bribe your way into the Big East -- it's doable, if money really is no object and it's spent well. But his kid will be long gone by the time things would really pick up.

These wheels have been in motion for last 2 years by the FedEx people and some other big $$ people. In last 12 months, Memphis has built a state of the art Golf training center, new softball field, and currently undergoing a major upgrade in the baseball facilities. In addition, the Finch Center has received major upgrades and a new Athletic office is currently under construction. All of these have been done with private $$ donated by the likes of SMith. The problem is we have a President who is clueless about athletics and a retirement age AD who is no longer hungry to do what it takes. The next time the Big East expands, Memphis will be in it. If the donors had been in charge the last time instead of RC Cola, Tigers, not DePaul, would already be a Big East member.

The next time the Big East expands? It has 247 schools now.

15 basketball teams but only 8 football schools

they could easily add another football team or two

Why aren't those schools also football programs in the Big East? There isn't an option to do one or the other.

I count 16 basketball: Cuse, Pitt, GTown, UConn, Prov, Lville, Cincy, Marq, SJU, USF, WVU, Rutgers, SHU, Vill, DePaul, ND.

Not a lot of room for another BB school, which I'm sure Memphis would demand.

Memphis would definitely demand the basketball team be in. I think they would squeeze them in. I'm not sure how'd that would work out, but they could start by kicking out ND as a basketball only member.

One of the basketball teams is ND, who refused to join the football side.

The other 7 don't have FBS football teams. Some of them I don't even think have one at all. It's a strange setup for sure.

If Memphis State started their move to the big time by building a "state of the art golf training center," then they really shouldn't even bother with athletics at all.

Seton Hall, Depaul, Nova, Providence, Georgetown, Marquette, and St Johns are also basketball only memebers. My guess is that several of those contribute less to the conference than Notre Dame.
