Some quotes from the article.

"I've thought a lot about it and I've decided not to play football anymore," Hoiem said. "I was unhappy playing the sport, I didn't love it. I just had no fun. I just know football doesn't make me happy."

"I couldn't do it," he said. "I hated playing last year all year long. After football was over I started to forget how much I didn't like it. I started training recently and started to get back into it. Once meetings started coming up it reminded me of all of those bad feelings. I knew there was no way I could go through all of this."

"I love Oregon and the coaches and all of that. I committed and I was so excited about playing there. I had every intention to play at Oregon. But I know now I would never be happy. I feel bad doing this and a lot of people won't understand it. But it's better I do this now then after I get there or even closer to signing day. I feel bad but I just know I couldn't keep playing anymore."

I think he also caught a whiff of Oregon's 2014 unis. :hi:

An Oregon fan? Shouldn't you be somewhere wearing skinny jeans, drinking PBR, and doing other hipster things?

Or is that only Portland?

Impressive decision by a relatively young man. I just wonder if he lived in a more urban environment if football would seem so unpleasant.? I mean I imagine sports might take more of a backburner mentality for a lot folks living in Hawaii.

Good for the kid. Never continue to go through something if you don't love it. It's not worth it. Good luck in life young man.

I understand how he feels. I felt the same when I was a junior in high school. I hated playing for the coach, and it just wasn't fun anymore. Bad coaches make football unfun.

Interesting. Wonder what's going on with the young man.

It said in another article on OregonLive that he lost a family friend recently who'd lived with his family for many years. He also said it wasn't just football but life in general -- he's been miserable ever since. He also said he isn't closing the door completely but basically thought it was only right to let Oregon know to open his spot back up.

TBH, it sounds like he's clinically depressed and needs help. A death and pressure/stress are well known triggers. I hope he gets it.

Anybody remember when Delle Donne, the #1 recruit decided she didn't like Basketball and left that coach at UConn to play Volleyball at Delaware?

After she sat out a year (as required) she came back and was one of the best players in all of college Womens Bball? Selected 2nd overall in the WNBA Draft.

..........please don't slam me for bringing up Womens BBall
