Seems like now, more than ever FR QB's are coming in and either playing or starting and there are plenty this yr. But look at UT back to the Heath Shuler yrs and how many FR or Tr Fr have played and started games as QB's at UT.

TR Fr Heath Shuler
Tr Fr Peyton Manning
Tr Fr Brandon Stewart
Rs Fr AJ Suggs
Tr Fr Casey Clausen
Tr Fr James Banks
Tr Fr Brent Schaeffer
Tr Fr Erik Ainge
RS Jonathan Crompton
Tr Fr Justin Worley
Tr Fr Tyler Bray
RS Nate Peterman.

So it is definitely not uncommon at UT for them to play, start and more times than not have very good yrs and careers at UT. Not sure if I missed anyone but definitely not uncommon at UT. And I am betting we add atleast 1 more this week to Tr Fr getting PT at the very least.

Peyton should have already had a kid raised by now. As soon as we figured out what type of players his family produces we should have forced a breeding situation at UT. We'd have another Manning here by now.

I think you missed the point of your own post and that is, as freshman, all these guys struggled to one extent or the other, even Peyton.

The true or RS freshman that can come in and do really well is pretty rare! JMO

Actually my point was it isnt uncommon, even moreso at UT. But now kids are even more ready, physically and mentally than they were 15-20 yrs ago.

Sweet another QB thread

Your the one in control of clicking on the thread, nobody made you read it. I could respond by saying Oh look another comment that adds nothing to the topic besides someone whining about something that isnt life altering. Was just making a statement about all the former Vol QB's that played or started as Fr and that was before it was as common as it is now.

I'm pretty sure Shuler redshirted in 1990. Regardless, he did play some a FR in 1991. I know he played in the UF game.

I didn't realize that James Banks started as a Freshman at QB. Of course the only thing I really remember him for is catching the hail Mary at the end of the half against Florida and the that strange play where he just completely fell over sideways before the ball was snapped (please tell someone else remembers that)

Every new QB is going to struggle until they get some experience--whether he is a true freshman or a redshirt junior. Coaches can see pretty quickly whether a kid has genuine skills and athleticism or not. If he does, and he has the /potential/ to be better than the other guys, then the sooner he gets on the field and gets some experience, the better. At this point, we should start playing one of the freshmen whenever their are opportunities and redshirt the other. If the playing freshman shows something, play him more. The idea is to improve the team as quickly as possible.

at georgia. Was he a freshman that year? In any case, I'm sure it was his first --and only?--start. I recall that we had almost no passing game with him--but he was athletic and he ran a lot and caused georgia some problems and the game was a lot more competitive than it should have been. It was YET ANOTHER example of how crucial QB mobility is in the college game. Banks was a WR playing QB, and yet he made us competitive with georgia simply because he could run.

Banks also had the luxury of a very stout John Chavis defense

Would our W/L record this year be any different if Worley starts the rest of the games or if one/both of the true freshmen played the majority of the snaps? Why not invest in the teams future now by getting the frosh valuable playing time now?

My memory is fading, but I believe CJ Leak actually started that UGA game and only played one series. Then they quickly gave up on him and went onto Banks.

That's right. Shuler only started 92 and 93

Exactly, he was the backup in '91 and played but didnt start. I was just saying all of those guys either played OR started. Trying to remember if BJ Coleman was a FR the game he started

You may be right I just know Banks played almost the whole game and Casey was back shortly after, although they brought him back a little too soon, he struggled at Ala game and his shoulder was not ready but we all know Fulmers hatred for Ala and winning at any cost against them. Damn I miss those yrs, especially living in Bammerland. We got losing streaks against UF, UA and Au. Dont see the Ala streak ending this yr but hoping the Auburn one does.

Would love to see Butch do that. If the Coach's think Ferguson or Dobbs are the future sooner than later then this wknd would be the perfect game to begin their development and getting used to the speed of the game and with GA the following week at home, an off week then SCe at home before headed to Tuscalooser this would be the perfect time. Just not sure it happens. Just not convinced Worley can get it done. Thats why I'm not a Coach.

Bad news. He may be impotent.

Good news. He tries very hard. :clapping:
