what a slimeball

Barney Frank knocked on his Fannie - BostonHerald.com

U.S. Rep. Barney Frank admitted he helped his ex-lover land a lucrative post with Fannie Mae in the early 1990s while the Newton Democrat was on a committee that regulated the lending giant — but he called questions of a potential ethical conflict “nonsense.”

Frank said he helped his former longtime companion, Herb Moses, land a job at Fannie Mae in 1991 after Moses graduated with a master’s degree in business administration from Dartmouth College. Frank said he was approached by a Fannie Mae executive and vouched for Moses, who formerly worked as an economist in the Department of Agriculture.

Frank was asked by the FM exec about Moss. Moss had been an economist at the Department of Agriculture and just gotten an MBA from Dartmouth. Frank responded that he thought Moss would do a good job.

Moss got an entry level position.

When a bill came up on FM, Frank disclosed that his companions worked at FM before he voted on the bill.

Really? This is what you are left to whine about? I'm sorry, but this thread is epically pathetic.

If the guy was qualified for the job, what does it matter? Plenty of people get jobs because they know people, including myself.

the second it was known this guy was frank's lover the fix was in. it's completely inappropriate. we have no idea if the guy was qualified or not. dropping frank's name took that away from the equation.

I don't know. The article didn't say.

Do you know?

Didn't think so.

Ok, so Moss dropped his name. Shame on Moss.

What, exactly, did Frank do wrong? He touted a guy who even the article grudgingly seems to concede was probably uber-qualified for the job and he acknowledged it before a vote.

Methinks the lady (you) doth protest WAY too much on this one.

So what you're saying is Frank got his lover in Fannie.

I lol'd.

he should have told the guy it was not appropriate for him to be involved in the process. if this was cheney and his lover got hired at haliburton you'd be having a heart attack with outrage. franks "everyone else does it too" excuse isn't exactly screaming lack of influence either.

So you think Frank became a fan of FM because his bff, an economist and Dartmouth MBA, was making 22k (or so) a year working for FM?

Puuuuuuhhhhhllllleeeeeaseee.

what the hell are you talking about? i think fannie hired his lover because he was the head of the banking committee and therefore had direct oversight of fannie's policies. fannie had no choice. this is a payout. nothing more, nothing less. 22K a year? link?

I give up. If this is what passes as the best GOP talking points nowadays, Godspeed.

you seriously can't at least see how this might APPEAR unethical?

I suppose you could say that any governmental official who puts in a good word for a friend or relative to get a job with a governmental agency, be it the one they work for, one they have some input on, etc., represents a potential conflict.

But, the article smacks of mountain/mole hill given the particular circumstances and I've yet to see an answer for his statement that he disclosed that he knew Moss before he made any votes on the program.

I remember some time back there was a state attorney general here in Florida. His 23 year old daughter had just graduated from FSU with a degree in fashion merchandising and she was appointed to head a 150-plus person department at the state department of agriculture that was responsible for inspecting fair rides.

That's the kind of thing I'm a bit more interested in, in large part because it is very difficult to imagine that she had any business being in that job and it seems clear that a contact got her in the position. From what you've posted, this is fairly innocuous and at any rate was disclosed.

Its just hard to get exercised about this one.

Now, if you want to criticize Barney Frank for being too cozy or too big a defender of FM, I think that's fertile ground. But this? Meh.

My experience has been, if you want a govy job, you have to know somebody in charge, be ex-military, or a minority. It is just the way it is.

If all the education stuff is correct, we can assume he was qualified. Like LG said though, if he got a PhD is something worthless like ethnic studies or basket weaving, I would take issue. He got an MBA from a respected school, so what.

Regardless, the second his lover took the job at the company he was in charge of overseeing, there was a conflict of interest. He should have resigned his duties of oversight. I feel like this is ethics 101 here. Yeah, it sucks, if his lover didn't want Frank to have to give up his position, he shouldn't have taken a job there.

Frank need an inside man so he could launch a Congressional probe through the back door of Fannie Mae.
