Freddie Dillione Injury Update

I feel like this deserves to not get buried in other threads. This, unfortunately, doesn’t sound that great. Hoping for the best. We need him.

Not good. He needed reps. Very strange that if they had an MRI scheduled in the morning (evidence enough of concern), why risk him against a team like Wofford?

Is Estrella injured or just not progressing fast enough? Phillips got those post minutes after Aidoo and Awaka. They did go small briefly but didn’t look very good.

Phillips is playing 4 and Estrella 5…Estrella has Aidoo and Awaka ahead of him, Phillips has JJJ and Mashack but when they wanna go big he’s the guy there.

Phillips is also being inserted in situations where we need defense. He seems to be more advanced in that area, currently, where he's able to use his athleticism, which is another area where he's more advanced than JPE.

Is this plantar fasciitis? Anyone know?
Could be a Jones fracture, which would be about 5-7 week recovery time. If it is a Lisfranc fracture, he's likely done for the season. Could be a Lisfranc strain, and that would sideline him for a couple months, probably. A complete tear of the plantar fascia would result in a 2-3 month timeline to recover.

None of these are good, but are probably the most likely issues to result in the "pop" FDv said he felt. 😕

Freddie has had something going on with the soft tissue in his feet for several weeks. It was called “fasciitis” last week, but I think there has been growing concern that it might be something else since he wasn’t improving. I really hope he didn’t fracture anything or snap a ligament tonight. Six weeks ago, the starting job was his to lose. It’s been sad to see him go downhill. Hope he’s back and healthy soon.

Maybe this is why Carr got into the game. I thought for sure he was going to be redshirted.

Did the rule ever change with redshirting same as football or are there still zero freebie games? If they changed the rule for basketball I missed it.

Really unfortunate and hate that we can’t get just one season with a healthy roster. Dillione could have been a difference maker for this team, but now it sounds like we’ll be lucky to see him play any meaningful minutes this season.

It will be interesting to see how we distribute Freddie’s minutes now, but I would expect this means a larger role for Carr moving forward.

And DJ is the only scholarship player to log zero minutes. Unless he is resting a minor injury, that is another bad sign.

Really big blow. Some were expecting him to be a top 3-4 player on this roster. Emergence of Gainey is huge to offset it though.
This is true. Gainey being able to so much more than we expected, offensively, helps to soften this blow, as does ZZ being available earlier than many expected. As he rounds into form, we will get better at that spot, too.

All 13 played in Game 1, no redshirts unless it’s medical.

He played 3 minutes at Wisconsin, not sure it’s a hard one to figure out.

I was thinking about it tonight, Barnes and staff were getting ran through the coals for not bringing in a PG from the portal. Nobody understood the moves or how PG wasn’t priority number 1, in retrospect that’s not looking like a terrible move on their parts.

I was one of those...which I'm sure is why you're making this point in reference to my post...but I had no idea that Gainey was that adept with the ball in his hands, nor that it would translate to high-major D1. Nothing in his highlights really suggested he had the chops to play effectively at PG at the SEC level, nor that he was a legit threat to get to the paint like he has been able to do, so far.

Color me pleasantly surprised. I'll own it.

Wasn’t a shot at you, you weren’t the only one who had that opinion…in fact I think I probably was one of the only ones thinking he could play some PG at this level if needed to, but I’m even surprised with how good he’s looked to this point in doing so. Just had kinda hit me tonight during the game that that was such a hot topic and then your post reminded me of that in game thought which seemingly has disappeared as a topic.

To be fair, it's still unknown if he can do it at the SEC level.

I think it's a few factors. (why we didn't go at just ANY PG in the portal, we still did pursue a few top choices though)

1. ZZ being able to get healthy and back to playing sooner than expected
2. Mashack's continued growth as a ball handler
3. Gainey being able to handle the ball as well as he does

You take into account that guys like DK and JJJ are also capable of bringing it up themselves and we really have a few options to pick from. Still hoping the best for Freddie, he needs to take a page from JJJ though and make sure he waits until he's fully healthy to return. This year's team has the depth to allow him to take his time rehabbing.
