Serious question here that I can't find the answer to that hopefully one of you can.

When I was growing up and played basketball, when defending free throws the first defender lined up between the big block and the goal. Now the first defender lines up on the outside of the big block. When and why did that change?

Thanks.

They do it in high school also.

I'm not sure why that changed. I'm pretty sure it has been within the last 15 years when the rule has changed.

Thanks. I know I'm getting old (hitting the big 4-0) this year, but I wasn't sure why this happened. Makes sense because the other way the defender was too close to the basket.

Actually, I heard that it somehow was thought to cut down aggressive play under the basket during free throws.

This is my understanding. Same reason people can't enter the lane until contact with the rim.

According to the information I read it was 2007/2008 that the change went into effect. The NCAA did a study apparently and decided that the offensive players actually had the advantage for the rebound run where they were so they backed everyone up one. It was also touched on that they though this would help decrease the aggressive rebounding and boxing out te was taking place under the basket.

Oh to be in my forties again rather than my sixties. Enjoy every year of your forties. Have a good evening.
