we haven't been good at free throws since Pearl has been here. I am not saying that this is directly contributed to him, but why is it that year after year we must watch missed free throws and wonder what could have been. They are things you can coach, practice, and get better at. It just doesn't make ANY sense at all.

We were shooting just under 70% on the season heading into tonight.

Let me know if tonight would have helped.

It would have. @ one point in the second half i think with like 7 minutes to go we were down by nine they put up a graphic on the screen showing the free throws made & attempted. We were 11-21. We make 8-9 of those it's a different ball game.

It's not entirely fair to do this, really. Something like FT% is streaky. We're just a bit better than your average ncaa team this year in this category, and we shot at around 60% today--which isn't good, but it's not horrible really. To suggest that it mattered 'when' we hit them is to suggest that a player can hit a shot better during a certain point than he can at another point. That's just not true.

Meeks was insane this evening, and us shooting at a 70% clip wouldn't have done much to stop Ky handing us an L.

It's a FREE throw!! You are standing at the front of the rim, with no one whatsoever in front of you. When i was in High School i shot 89% from the free throw line & til this day i think i could have gotten better. It is ridiculious when i see a college player shoot worse than 80% from the line.

The average NBA team only shoots at a 75% clip, so you're expectation of 80% is just nuts.

There are only 70 guys in the nba that are currently shooting 80% at the stripe.

It's a difficult thing to do consistently at 8 out of 10.

The NCAA average this year is 68.6.

I mean come on, be realistic.

I am being realistic! It is a FREE throw like i said before, their is no one in front of you!!! I dont understand how teams & players shoot that bad from the line its ridiculious.

Just get over it. You're holding players to an unrealistic standard if you're expecting everyone to shoot 80%. That's just nonsense. I don't care if no one is in front of them or not. And woo hoo for you that you could do it.

Free throws are something that players have to practice themselves. With the limits on practice time, there is very little devoted to free throw shooting. The new generation of player obviously doesn't find it very important. This is not just TN but a majority of basketball.

Pretty much everyone has improved their FT shooting from last year to this year. Chism, B Will, and T Smith are the notables. I would include JP but I don't think he's worthy of being mentioned.

Chism has done a 180 with his free throws. I've been very impressed.

His turn around in FT % has transformed him from a decent big man to a very very good big man. Can't wait to see him in the NBA.

We'll see. Best of wishes to Wayne, but I'm skeptical. Still goes soft to the rim and doesn't pose much of a mid-range threat for his size.

sick 3 by brian williams by the way, he has to be my fav. player on UT because I heard something on a UT basketball broadcast last year about how brian williams was like a professional video gamer or something before he took up basketball. Too bad basketball isn't as easy as it is with a joystick on NBA 2K5 or something.

1984 nba FT% average: 76.4%

1994: 73.7%

2004 nba FT average: 75.6%

That's an interesting dip in 94', but things aren't really that much worse in FT shooting since the 'old days', it seems.

Just looked it up, he never played High School Basketball, but he taught himself to play basketball by playing video games and learning plays and stuff. He's a sasquatch

Doesn't mean he was a professional video gamer. Big difference. Hobbie =/= profession. I'm fairly sure he understood you, he just knew you were being ridiculous.
