Funny, I wonder if that's why Butch recruits so many three stars as of late... You think we'd at least have one heismam with all our three stars.

just goes to show that stars don't mean anything. Please correct me if I'm wrong, which I usually am, but wasn't Barnett a 3 star?

Stars do matter. You think Bama, Clemson, Ohio St are loaded with 3 stars? A few are ok, but when you have too many , then you end up with 7-5 or 8-4. UT's DBs are prime example

This is a good read. Just goes to show how subjective those recruiting rankings really are.

How Lamar Jackson went from 3-star recruit to Louisville Heisman winner - SBNation.com

No it just shows that the services miss out occasionally, especially when the player isn't camping all summer for 3 or 4 years. Very few 3 stars end up being the explosive player that Jackson is, and he only became a Heisman caliber player with one of the best offensive minds and QB coaches in the game tutoring him. Lamar Jackson comes to Tennessee or a multitude of other places and hes a guy who shows flashes of amazing athletic ability but struggles with making good decisions with the football or making the right reads. Coaching is half the equation here, for anyone that thinks loading up on three stars is the path to a championship, especially when you play in this league and you have to play Alabama every year.

Agree with much of what you say here. Coaching matters. Certainly not saying any big time program would be wise to load up on 3 stars. Also, and this is in line with what Doug Matthews says, when you have young players who have unique athletic ability, you have to get them on the field.

Lots more 3* kids in the NFL than 4* and 5* kids.

Also sometimes making a position change in college is what gets a kid exploding and serious NFL interest.

Other kids fight a position change and that hurts them.

I'd hate to try to get 85+ 18 to 22 year old kids to buy in and do the things I think they need to be doing on and off the field.

That's a very tough job.

VFL...GBO!!!

Especially our CBs we have yet to land or develop an SEC caliber CB outside of cam. That really worries me going into next season. More so than QB

A lot of that is because there are more 3 star ratings given out compared to 5 star ratings. Despite what we believe ratings do have a bit to do with team success very few teams if any have came out of the SEC with marginal talent.

He went from 3* to Heisman because he was a raw, skinny, athletic prospect with marginal QB skills, who got connected with an offensive mastermind.

Coaching matters!!!

The ranking systems arent perfect, but it's the best we've got. It certainly isn't an excuse to stop recruiting 4 and 5 stars.

Bad coaching can make the 5 stars look like busts. See UT and Georgia. The team that Kirby Stupid took over was in the top 4 in star rankings.

If stars "don't mean anything", then nobody on here should criticize Saban again by saying "well, with all those #1 recruiting classes, he oughtta win the national title every year and if he doesn't, he's not a very good coach".

Stats don't matter every time, for every player, nothing is 100%. But you better believe they matter. The more 4 and 5 star players you get, the better off you are, no matter who your coach is.

maybe because there are exponentially more 3* recruits?

Answer: the best player in the country.

Kudos to Kentucky for playing him so well.

I don't think Lamar was the best player in the country. The media just rode his jock strap too much the whole season.
