With the possibility of Gruden coming I admit that I was excited. However, not just for the possibility of Gruden but I thought even if it were not him that this AD was going for a big name a proven winner to revive this program. Now, realistically I don't blame anyone for Gruden not being here. But it seems to me that there is a very large gap between what we were once aiming at and what we now are seemingly settling for. We skipped from A grade coaching to C and aren't even considering or trying to acquire any b grade coaches. Golden, Gundy, Fisher and Strong just aren't home run hires. This list seems to be the least that we will settle for, not the best that we can get!

I don't think it would be a huge step down at all if Gundy or a Patterson were hired. These are proven winners and BCS bowl guys at the college level. Gruden is a name. He has not won a single game in college. He has never been in charge of recruiting or following the rules of recruiting. Gruden IMO, would be a bigger risk than just about ANY college coach who has proven they can win. Gruden would have had the biggest impact on recruiting, the product on the field, who knows?

IMO,

Gruden A-

Patterson A

Gundy A-

Strong B

Fedora B

Davis B+

At least I heard of the coaches we are looking at time.

Sorry but Tennessee at this time is not a place most grade A coaches want to come. Why? Because most of them are in currently better situations.

So I think we are very incorrect with saying that this is 'not the best we can get'. If we are not careful there is a good chance we could miss out on Gundy and Strong we will truly be looking at a coach out of left field.

Who would be on your "B" coaching list?

Most posters on here saw Gruden as an A+ and everyone else an "F".

Are we even looking at Patterson or Petersen?? Those are the guys I would like us to interview.

Gundy and Strong will probably be fine (I am warming up to these two, but not might first picks). I don't want jones or fisher.

I agree Patterson would be a B. but haven't herd his name mentioned as far as Tenn. Gundy definitely a C. No D. The rest are C. A B list to me would be. Patterson, Peterson, Kelly, Davis Tressel and just for his coaching ability Patrino without baggage

Exactly my point. We haven't herd these names mentioned in our search and they are far better than what we seem to be looking at

Petersen is not a realistic option but I think he is a better coach than Gruden (yes I said it).

Patterson I am curious why not heard anything about him. Could it be Hart used back channels to see if interest and the we go a big fat 'NO'? Kind of hard to judging a coach search when we only know 2% of what is actually going on.

That is also true.

I'm with you on the fact that I really had my heart set on a 'A' type coach for lots of reason but one main was to steal 4 and 5 star recruits from our rivals. A guy can dream.

I disagree that Gundy, Fisher, Strong and even Golden are 'C' coaches. I'd grade all those at a 'B' or better but none of them will make a splash like I was hoping for. If it's down to Gundy and Strong, which who know at this point, I wouldn't be disappointed with either. Definitely an upgrade from what we've been through.

And I am with you on Strong. I just think it is bad when we use the criteria for coaching acceptance to be better than what we had because we basically had nothing. I am just saying it looks like we are missing the home run we were hoping for

I hate to say it but I just don't see this job being attractive to A or B type coaches. With the competition in the SECeast, lack of fertile in state recruiting grounds and the state of the program it's a tough sell. Not the job it once was IMO.

I agree, it's sad we're happy to settle with a double when the coach (fanbase) knows we have homerun potential.

The question is who fault it is we are missing the home run hire. Is it the AD's fault or is it the situation at Tennessee is not attractive to home run hires at this time?

The problem with the last search was in relation to timing (NSD so close) and the talent we was unable to attract A, B, or C level coaches. So we got a D level coach. We should of let Bagget coach interim for a year and did a search after the next season.

Now we are unable to attract A level coaches due to our current situation in the SEC and the fact it is harder to recruit to Tennessee than ever due to this. So maybe Gundy is a B+ level coach and Strong is around a B or so. That doesn't change that are the top of list of true possible hires.

You are incorrect if I am understanding your post correctly. There is no homerun hire potential out there. Gundy is as close as you going to get. Sorry but the fanbase needs to step back.

Yes it is not always the case, but South Carolina became the home for old coaches.

Also it is about timing. There are no real A+ coaches without a job looking to coach in college right now. If there was a coach like Spurrier or Saban who wanted to come back to college right now I would think Tennessee would have a great chance to land them. That is why Gruden would of been nice. Sadly there is none. So the South Carolina comparison is really not fair.

Anything is possible, but based on reports/rumors/leaks/anything tangible etc., that's a bigger fantasy than the notion that Gruden wanted the job and Dave Hart gave him the cold shoulder.

I agree with the point of A+ coaches out there...just don't see any available!

Gundy would be a gigantic step down from Gruden.
