Fan bases shouldn't be worried that their team is committing three-star prospects. Heck, three-star prospects are good players with lots of upside. Sure, that upside is part of the recruiting equation but you also have to factor in other issues like getting into school, staying in school, character and player development. The other caveat that's needed is coaching. Sure coaches downplay that all the time, saying it's about the players. You here coaches say all the time, "It's about the Jimmys and Joes, not the Xs and Os."

To me, that's a bunch of bull. Coaches have to develop their players and put them in position(s) to make plays and win football games. And you can certainly do that with a lot of three-star prospects. Just look at Frank Beamer at Virginia Tech. Has anyone in the country done more with good, solid three-star recruits than Beamer? On the flip side, how many programs out there sign their share of five-star prospects and haven't won squat? Plenty.

I'm actually okay with our recruiting class so far...more OL prospects would be nice, but so far so good.

Yeah I mean some DL could be OL but we need a nice big time O tackle commit and this class will round out nicely.

Teams like Florida State and Miami are prime examples of teams that do great in recruiting, but it doesn't show on the field.

And Tennessee...

That was the biggest thing my friends and I have been talking about for the past decade. No development whatsoever. That's where UT bball is at now, too. Hopefully the Fulmer trend won't continue in football.

By "bball", do you mean baseball or basketball?

i know we don't have any 5 stars, but i think we have a solid core for a recruiting class...a qb and o-line would really help us alot and maybe some committments from the visitors this weekend would make me happy but its a solid class so far

what Coach O did at ole miss is a prime example....i have confidence that we will get above and beyond out of the majority of the recruits we bring in whether they be rated highly by certain websites or not. it will definitely take a few years, but the thought alone is extremely exciting.

That's a stretch. I could see him getting a 4th star though. But he may not qualify, so it may be a moot point.

Broussard would be a mid to high four star now if it weren't for the grade issues. He dominated camps early in the summer and is a big time player. It may be a stretch to say he is going to qualify from what I hear but I don't think it is a stretch to say he could be a 5 star talent.

it's not a coincidence that the teams that annually finish in the top-10 recruiting every year also appear in the top-10 final ap poll every year. there are plenty of players you can coach up or get lucky with, but not enough to win the national championship or even the sec.

I heard this alot about Tommy Tuberville about 2 years ago.

I think everyone knows recruiting matters. I think the point is alot of times we have ranked high in recruiting and the preformance on the field hasn't lived up to the recruiting hype. Which happens alot as well. Just because you finish in the top 10 in recruiting doesn't automatically mean you are going to finish in the top 10 and to prove that point Newberg mentions Va Tech. Sure they are not in the SEC but I think everyone would agree they are usually a pretty good football team (Which is really hard for me to say living in Northeast TN and having to work with a bunch of Tech fans). The reason for that is coaching, evaluations, and development. Which are things ,us as Tennessee fans, are thinking will improve given the track record of Coach O and the resume of the other assistants.
