Hooray!!!!
The SEC announced that the (stupid) rule put in place several years ago about noise has now gone the way of prohibition (that’s a ban on alcohol for those in Lower Alabama). So now the Miss. State fans can pass out the cowbells without fear of penalty, and fans of all schools can make as much noise as they can. (Was this really a problem? That’s another column.)
In celebration (another stupid rule) Coach Fulmer has come out and told Vol fans to show at the game and cheer loudly and make Neyland Stadium a home advantage again.
Maybe Fulmer should follow his own advice.
What has been silent from Neyland is not the fans, so much as it has been the players. Fulmer and his teams have been horrid against top-rated teams in the country, and in the SEC. It is Tennessee, that needs to get loud. Now this is not another excuse for the Thompson-Boling crowd to come in and sit on their butts the whole game, while telling me to sit down (yes, it has happened in Neyland folks). But let’s face it, we as Tennessee fans haven’t exactly had a lot to cheer about. Vols fans have proven that when the potential is there, they can be the loudest in the conference…which makes them the loudest in the country.
Here are the ones who need to stand up and make their presence known on Saturday:
Erik Ainge: No excuses, you’re a Junior, you need to be mentally tough. Put last year behind you and be as tough as you were in the last quarter of the Florida game in 2004. If you can’t do it, bow out and let us see the most popular backup since Heath Shuler.
O-line: All the talk about the line being so young and inexperienced is ridiculous. We had experienced, "all-American" linemen when Munoz was playing, and look where that got us. Time to go back to those mean, nasty and mentally tough o-linemen that we are used to seeing at UT. We have no use for prima donnas on the line.
Receivers: It’s put up or shut up time. Taylor can turn these guys around, but do they have what it takes to be one of the best groups of UT receivers ever? Time will tell.
Coach Cut: The offensive guru needs to show why Notre Dame wanted him, and Fulmer needed him.
Tennessee fans have a bad taste in their mouths from last year, so the enthusiasm is not quite there. As with 2004, as long as the potential is there Vol fans will support their team in droves. But if Fulmer wants Neyland Stadium to become a terror for teams to come into, then it’s his squad that needs to make the noise.
Bottom line: Tennessee fans have a fever and the only cure is a win over Cal, not more cowbell.
