No man has ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country. General Patton
Nothing has defined who we are as human beings like war. War has turned world powers into superpowers; they have made men of boys, martyrs of madmen, and heroes of the unlikeliest of people. Think of majestic generals such as Washington, Patton and of course Lee, who courageously led their men into battle, fighting for a cause they all strongly believed in, there way of life.
And here in the South, the tradition continues.
Now our wars only take place a few Saturdays a year, every year, but they do no less of a job defining a generation. No loss of life, but casualties can accumulate nonetheless, and heroes are still created on the field. And this year will be no different.
Saturday will be a defining moment for the Volunteer Army and its people as they face off against the Florida Gators in a battle of unbeaten teams, on their home turf. By Saturday morning everywhere you thought was safe, will be occupied by carpetbaggers in orange and blue (and not even a good-looking color of orange). Their whole purpose is to come in, beat us and go on to conquer the SEC, and the Vols are the ones to stop em. Hey, I know people who are Gator fans and I can get along with them, just not this week.
As far as creating heroes, past notables such as Casey Clausen, Al Wilson and Heath Shuler have made their names in this game oh yeah dont forget a freshman named Erik Ainge. Now Im having a little fun with the analogy, but we all know its much, much bigger than just a game.
Both teams have something to prove this weekend, not to mention the winner becomes the front-runner in the quest for SEC East supremacy. This game will show us whether we get to enjoy the team we saw two weeks ago that amazed us, or the one last year that made us want to sell our tickets. It is the last chance for Tennessee fans to tell Chrissy Leak how they feel about him bashing Tennessee on ESPN. Because just like family, we can say what we want about each other, but we dont tolerate outsiders running their mouths about one of us. This is the opportunity for the Vols to show last year was a fluke, and that Urban Meyer is merely a myth. This is a time like no other for Vol fans to come together. Forget about your feelings about Fulmer, this game is bigger than him (save your jokes for after the game).
On Friday, if you call yourself a Vol fan, and you arent wearing Tennessee Orange, you need to go home and rethink your life. I have to spend my Friday in Georgia (just wait till you see that weeks article) either visiting Dog fans, or driving the territory, and you better believe I am wearing my bright Tennessee Orange tie.
Be as ready as Paul Revere, because the Gators are coming. When you are in Neyland Stadium, you have to cheer as loud as you have ever cheered. Make the Cal game seem like the old days at the TBA. Firget Rosie the Riveter, give me Rosie the Chest Bumper. Just like those boys, if you give your all for Tennessee then regardless of the outcome, you will stand proud. I have never been too thrilled about the direction of the program over the past few years, but you better believe that I will grow wool like you have never seen for this game.
So lock up your kids, put on your battle uniforms, and get ready. Because this Saturday we will be united under a common banner, with one common goal to BEAT FLORIDA!!!
