I know it's not UT (feel free to move) but I found FSU's use of past stars interesting. Not only is it getting the players back to campus but it's getting recruits 1-on-1 time with some big NFL names.

Is FSU's camp of past stars a glimpse into the future? -- dailypress.com

Former Seminoles such as Charlie Ward, Anquan Boldin, Bryan McFadden, William Floyd, Derrick Alexander, Peter Warrick, Terrell Buckley, Casey Weldon, Corey Simon and Leon Washington were on hand.

Even if nothing the aforementioned players "taught" the recruits sunk in, the star power all on one field must have made an impression. In the seven days following the camp, FSU received six commitments. Defensive tackle Demonte McAllister, athlete Lonnie Pryor and wide receiver Rodney Smith — all ranked in the nation's top 50 at their respective positions by most recruiting analysts – were among the commitments.

Yeah, I agree. These kind of camps are really appealing to kids and seem like a great way to put the school's football on a pedestal. UT should do something like this IMO

Not a bad idea. Given the nearly unanimous support for Fulmer among former players, I'm sure we could get quite a few back to campus for something like that.

I completely agree.

I got to watch FSU's strength competition. The way they treat that thing is amazing also. Spotlights, announcers, big crowd, all of that goes a long way with recruits.

The U has made a point of getting former players involved for some time. I dont know why we dont do something to create a "splash".

Past players would be also huge in counseling underclassmen with a number of issues Freshmen face, and it coming from someone other than a coach.

good point. I want some razzel dazzel, we've been pedestrian way too long.

What exactly are the rules for using former players to help with recruiting? Wasn't there an issue with USC using Reggie Bush to help in their pursuit of McKnight?

I'm not aware of any NCAA rule that forbids former players counseling recruits. However the idea makes so much common sense the NCAA may very well outlaw it.

This is the story that I was talking about:

LOS ANGELES -- The University of Southern California is looking into whether it may have violated NCAA recruiting rules while pursuing highly rated recruit Joe McKnight, a university official said.

McKnight signed a national letter of intent with USC on Wednesday and made comments during a news conference that seemed to suggest communications involving former Trojan Reggie Bush, who is now with the New Orleans Saints.

Former players are forbidden from telephoning prospective recruits, their relatives or guardians.

Thought I knew how to link to the entire story but I couldn't get it to work so this will have to do. I'm still not sure when its ok to use former players and when it isn't. Sure its defined somewhere, I've just never heard the distinction.

with what the U does and FSU's thing, also UF's friday night lights, you have to wonder where the Vols are in this thing.

Rex, do you know where the line is for these types of things that I was talking about above? What is the distinction between these types of events, if they are using former players, and what USC got in trouble for?

I dont have a clue. but it sound like the calls may have been the issue. it could be that on campus is a different animal.
