this came from an article I saw on MrSEC.com from the 1st

MrSEC

Former Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer, speaking at a Chattanooga school on Monday, weighed in on the job current Vol coach Butch Jones inherited:

“It’s going to take time. When you go through three coaches in four or five years… Butch has lots of challenges…

Butch is a guy I’ve come to really appreciate and respect. I think (taking in a recent practice at Jones’ request) was good for me and I think it was good for the university. It was certainly good for my family, and all it was about was to be there to support.”

(sorry if already posted, I just came across it and didn't see anything; if so please merge)

It will definitely take time. It's hard to be patient, but that's what we've got to do. I don't see Butch even having much of a chance at great success until MAYBE year three. He's a good coach, though, and he'll get us back to being respectable soon.
Just look at Randy Edsall at Maryland. We knew that guy was a good coach, but he won six games in his first two seasons there. Now, he's already 4-0, and he just blew out WVU.
Butch may not be the next Nick Saban, but I feel confident that he's also not the next Derek Dooley.

I am with you on this ..

I think we make some strides next season though.. Got some serious talent coming in that we haven't seen around these parts in years. A great mix of talent and respectable young uns are on their way. Plus next year will be a down year in the SEC . Georgia loses Murray and SC loses Shaw/Clowney. Bama loses mccaron / Mosley . Mizzou loses Franklin. Vandy starts new QB. We also have a favorable schedule FINALLY .

USCe should be fine at QB based on their backup's (/next starter's) play last season

It's the 'expectations' part that is the problem. We've been used to great runs that to see such dismal, even mediocre efforts we cringe. If anything, this is a test for the fanbase as much as for the team. Do we remain faithful and committed no matter what? Do we stand by these kids who have committed to UT? Or do we gripe and complain and not show up for games - waiting until the team turns out 8 plus wins? This is the gut check part we fans have to deal with. Right now a decent sized chunk of fans have checked out on their support. We have to wonder when (if not already) the team does this. Do players (younger ones especially) clock out waiting for another year or two for better recruits to give it their all? Do they just go through the motions until more depth and talent shows up? Do they quit until that time comes? Is this our attitude as fans?

If Phillie really wants to help, a few dozen phone calls to his former HS sources (coaches, etc.) paving the way for Jones nationally would be the least he could do.

If he can't do that, he could simply shut up. :whistling:

Yeah he's ok. I am just sick of that Shaw crap where he takes off and gets an easy first down when there is no where to throw the football.. But he does fumble the ball a lot :naughty: . will miss that .

@ Oklahoma and @ Ole Miss, plus our usual SEC East/Bama schedule, doesn't seem favorable to me.

It's hard to put a healthy estimate on when Butch will have this turned around. I would say that by year 3 we should be challenging for SEC Championships or at the very least nationally relevant. I'd say this year we need to have at least one surprise or legit victory over an SEC opponent. I notice some parts of this team that are improving. I'd say Palardy has been a big bright spot. The team generally is playing a little more disciplined and sounder. Worley's improvement is critical--we get him making better decisions and not turning the football over I'll be happy. What's funny is that first few games the biggest criticism could be the lack of ability to convert on third down throws. The South Alabama game he starter throwing interceptions. I think it's a good sign he's saying that Georgia's D has holes. He's got to deliver on those throws and he's got to deliver the football with timing and accuracy. No turnovers.

We aren't playing LSU :) or Oregon :)

Georgia wont be as good next year :)

Florida loses that Easley next year. Purifoy goes to the league . Driskel is doo doo. And we play them at home...

Bama will be Bama of course but what else is new ?

I mean for the love of god have some sort of optimism for good things to happen..:peace2:

Who's to say Driskel will still be there, or even still starting. They might just keep playing that same backup QB that not only beat us but - according to some - has surprisingly turned out to be better than Driskel was.

A good coach will make a difference over time...Butch has won everywhere he's been so everyones got to be patient...Look at the job Rich Rod has done at Arizona, Those guys couldn't beat anyone and now he has them playing some good ball and he inherited very little...But they bought in to his system and are doing pretty well...We're going to be fine but until Butch gets the right players he needs for his system times are going to be a little rough...If you can't be patient and let things fall into place then go fishing for a couple of years...The time will just fly by and by the time you get back UT should be on its way back to respectablity.

I am going to stop spitting any more venom at Fulmer. I wish that the Majors haters would do the same. It's time that we all unite and focus our collective ire at those who truly deserve it.
Dooley.

Good point but some would rather focus ire at 18-22 year old college kids.

Well then chalk up as a loss then . :cray:

It's hard for me to completely blame the players considering they have had little to no coaching the past three years.

Didn't mean to direct that at you. Others on here seem to put all if not almost all ire on those kids rather than a system that has failed them. So rather than showing up for games, packing the house, and cheering these guys on (not to mention showing recruits the full atmosphere) some here would rather take it out on these kids. Just sayin'...

I didn't take your comment as directed toward me. I hear what you're saying and agree. People that call the kids out need to consider what they have been through with absolutely no coaching. To these folks I ask, take a look at the "stars" that we have had the past few years. How many of them really significantly improved in their time here? The ones that did, was it just natural maturing or coaching?

I think Tennessee will come up like Louisville did. It took a few years for Charlie Strong to get Louisville back into contention, and now they are a respectable team.
