There are two storied programs that have been struggling with bad coaches, and neither one can afford to have the same coach there in 2010. Notre Dame and Michigan are probably the most prestigious programs in the history of college football, which is why it doesn't make sense that they are having so much trouble finding someone to lead their football teams. Especially Notre Dame, who has not had a good football coach since Lou Holtz.
The only way that these schools get out of the basement is to hire some coaches with fire power, and these two guys are what they need. Tommy Tuberville would be a great coach for Notre Dame, and Phillip Fulmer would bring talent back to South Bend, Michigan. Holding on to Rodriguez is a terrible move, but hiring him in the first place was the biggest mistake. They went for name recognition as opposed to a coach that enforces the traditions of the Wolverines. And Chuckie Weis, forget about it. With the talent that he has had at this school, he was a disgrace, and proved that he should not be a head coach for ANY school.
The smart thing is to hire these guys by the beginning of 2010. Give them an early start to recruiting, and they will be back to 9-3 teams by year two. If these coaches remain at ND and Michigan, watch your program stay in that unflushed toilet for the next few years.
