get his act together in a hurry or the Vols could be in long-term trouble, IMO. You can have one poor recruiting year--but if UT doesn't perform lots better on the field next year and then has another weak recruiting year, then the program has serious issues. florida, georgia, south carolina, bama, auburn , lsu--those six programs are all serious competitors now, and the Vols can't afford to be mediocre any longer. This is all Fulmer's fault for not seeing two weaknesses that have been been apparent for at least four years--deteriorating offensive production and bad special teams play. I complained about both for years--but Fulmer, because he got lucky and won quite a few ugly games since 2000 despite problems, assumed everything was OK when it wasn't. Essentially, the problems caught up with him and the team this year. Cutcliffe will help--but he and Chavis have a lot of work ahead.

Everything you state is rational, reasonable, and truthful. Now let's sit back and watch the appologists wear you out. :clapping:

I'm an "apologist,"--I wouldn't use that term, but you did, so I won't argue-- and I agree, to some degree, with just about everything he said. The SEC is a beast, and mediocrity won't cut it. Our record this year was just a hair below mediocre, and that is unacceptable. The special teams were only special in the "nice word for retarded" sense for most of the year, and the offense was just plain lousy when not playing a school from Kentucky. I don't think our talent level is mediocre, and I don't think our coaching staff, especially with the recent upgrades, is mediocre. Still, any more .500 years will hurt our talent and might change my opinion of the coaches.

But...(you know it was coming, didn't you  )

I don't think you can hang all of Fulmer's wins over the last few years on luck and not give a lot of this year's losses to luck as well (personally, I don't think luck had a lot to do with either the wins or losses, but that's just me.) I don't think the answer to our problems is to bash, or worse fire, Fulmer. I don't think the answer is to lynch our probable starting quarterback, a freshman all-America last year before coming unglued as a soph, in favor of someone who has never seen take a college snap until at least evaluating them in spring practice.

The weaknesses the original poster spoke of have been addressed by the coaching changes. I understand why going 10-3 in consecutive years would be a hinderance to making wholesale changes in the program.

All that being said, I'm hopeful about next year. The talent will be there, and I believe the revamped coaching staff can develop them into a conference contender. The schedule sets up pretty nicely. And I always seem to be hopeful in the offseason because I've got faith that the school, coaches, and players are going to correct the problems that caused this year's disappointment.

I don't see why I need to appologize for that :hi:

Blaming Fulmer is 100% accurate. For years everyone, at least all that weren't wearing those heavily orange tinted goggles saw UT's offense slipping and becoming moldy.

That said, admittingly I really thought UT should have been in contention for the Rose Bowl this year. We had superior talent vs everyone else on our schedule (possible exception was LSU) we had experience returning, what should have been an all SEC qb, remarkable size on the ol, not one but several top flight rb's, speed & size at the wr position, tv exposure, playing at least 5 rookie hc coaches, supposely (again) one of the best ol's in UT history & a favorable pre-season ranking all were in place. Obviously, I discounted my own forecast and thought all those positives would override a pathetic offensive coaching staff. Was I ever wrong.

A set up like that doesn't come by very often & you darn better capitalize on it when it appears. Call that beating a dead horse or not, that's the way it was.

No apologies needed. You speak the TRUTH. The naysayers and their negative attitude.... they are the same ones in the stands that were still yelling for Brandon Stewart to enter the game while Manning was breaking all the records.

Freak, I think you need to add a smiley with orange tinted glasses or goggles. Its getting close to being the most used cliche on this board.
