I watched the game on my TIVO, which allows me the courtesy of rewinding and replaying in slow motion. I must say, that most of the penalties called on Tennessee (and not called on Auburn) were obviously poor calls in slow motion.
I'll skip over the other calls and get right to the meat of the game. The Vols tied just the game 21-21. Auburn is staring at a 3rd-and-11 at their own 33. The Vols stop them to force a punt.... but wait.... the official calls Fellows for pass interence. The replay showed that it was in fact a nicely timed hit and NOT pass interence. Auburn scores on the next play to go up 28-21.
Tennessee takes the kickoff, still with some momentum after having scored 14 points in the 2nd half. However, 3 penalties in 4 plays pushed the Vols back to their own 7-yard line and a 2nd-and-23. The biggest was calling a hold on a 45-yard pass completion to Robert Meachem.
The Vols punt, and the Vols hold Aubie to a field goal and 31-21 lead. The Vols rush back down the field and pull back within 31-28 on Gerald Riggs 9-yard run.
O' my gosh, it's close again... time to pull out the yellow hankys. Or actually in this case... hold on to them... Turk McBride, for the 2nd time in the series, touched the offensive lineman. By rule, the play does not count if their is contact prior to the snap. Aubie scores a 42-yard touchdown on the free play.
I will say, however, that had the Vols been able to play better defensively... ie not giving up the big plays, that they would have had a much better chance of winning the game.... considering that Aubie's 2 touchdowns in the 2nd half came on 53yd and 43yd pass plays.
