Some interesting names on here. Ironically, no Heupel.

Tennessee football, Phillip Fulmer's coaching candidates after Jeremy Pruitt's firing revealed in email

-Hugh Freeze
-Billy Napier
-Shane Beamer
-Tony Elliot
-Luke Fickell
-Tee Martin
-Bill O'brien
-Matt Campbell
-Jamey Chadwell
-Will Healy
-Justin Wilcox
-Jeff Monken
-Blake Anderson
-Mike Elko
-Joe Brady
-Alex Grinch

Also interesting that Fulmer somehow believed he would be entrusted to make another coaching hire.

Hiring was always his strong point. If you dont believe it check out his coaching tree.(not). He would have conducted a Nation Wide search and shazam, the most qualified candidate was already on campus.

Most amazing thing is he was defending Germy as close as 4 weeks before he got fired.

You list that final entry as "Alex Grinch."

But it was "Alex French" on the email. What if that was Fulmer's personal code for someone controversial? Someone associated with French's mustard and golf balls being thrown at him?

Yes, what if maybe--just maybe--Lane Kiffin, aka Joey Freshwater, maybe aka Alex French, was the 16th guy on the list?

Huh?

Makes you wonder....

Go Vols!

(this is mostly tongue-in-cheek, I mean it is possible but this is just for fun, heh)

Either way, be glad it wasn't Alex Grinch. I think he's a sincerely good guy, but his time at Oklahoma was terrible and Venables is having to completely clean up the mess that Grinch and Riley left. I expect that USC will do well offensively as long as they have a QB, but the defense will be their downfall because of Grinch.

Grinch might be one of those guys who does really well as a HC, but just not as a coordinator. Seemingly a contradiction, but not impossible.

Grinch did really well at Wazzu with Mike Leach against some pretty good offensive teams.

I think the issue there may just be with Riley himself. The guy has been a HC for a decade now and has he ever had even one decent defense?

Wow. 16 coaches and I’d take Josh Heupel over any of them. Thank you Danny White.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

I don’t have anything against Fulmer, but he’s not AD material.

It’s really not Fulmer’s fault they hired him. No major program in the country has him on their short list as an AD candidate.

To be fair there was A LOT of crying about Heup being hired at the time.

Beamer was a GA under Fulmer. Not saying that makes him a lock but Fulmer knew him better than some.

We would’ve done an “exhaustive national search” to end up with Tee Martin or Beamer as HC.
Maybe Beamer wasn’t as much of a clown back then. Sure seems like Carolina’s version of Butch Jones today though.

I never would want Tee to be the HC here. He is a cherished member of our Vol family and some “fans” would find a way to ruin that.

The thing that amazes me in hindsight was how basically no one, even people who really know College Football, had Heupel on their lists. Guess I shouldn’t feel too bad that I wasn’t a big fan of the Heupel hire when not even the „experts“ had him in their radar. Had anyone honestly ever heard discussions of Heupel before he showed up in Knoxville ?

How do we know that Fulmer would not have shoe horned himself back in as head coach? And saying he was here to save the program. We all know his ego is that big.
Had he done this, it would have only been because he is Big Orange through and through! No other reason!
