I say keep the out of conference money in state between the UT extensions and throw in other in state public schools. Alternate UTC and UT Martin and rotate TSU, Austin Peay, Tech, ETSU, something like this ........
I would exclude Memphis, because they can generate their own revenue and they may as well do these same scenarios. Memphis is capable of winning their conference and capable of making the playoffs, so it makes zero sense for Tennessee to schedule Memphis in football for the reasons being discussed if strength of schedule doesn't count.
I'd also like for the SEC to go back to 8 conference games, maybe even drop it to 6. Everyone plays 6 in conference games and 6 out of conference. If they aren't going to factor strength of schedule at all then the SEC MUST revamp across the board.
I am not defending Bama, they don't deserve to be in this season, even with a strength of schedule advantage. They have 3 losses, 1 to Vandie and 1 (weren't even competitive) to a bad Oklahoma team very late in season. Win at Norman and they're in (sadly).
At least it keeps TONS of revenue in state to schools that desperately need the revenue and you can maybe reduce travel, lodging and logical expenses for some of these state schools by playing 1 of them each year in Nashville's new stadium being built. Make it the first game of the season, or the last. Last may be better for the Vols, if they are having to play in Atlanta for SEC Champ game ..??
The SEC also needs to take a serious look at ending the SEC championship game. Although, the committee says they won't penalize a team for losing a conference championship game, it will eventually screw someone, it's inevitable and watch the Vols be the first to suffer from something like this. If you end up with a ton of 1 or maybe even 2 loss teams all jockeying for the last spots to fill the playoff, there are many scenarios that could leave an SEC runner up out with 2 or 3 losses.... It's not if, but when and it would be the most Vol thing ever if UT was to be the first.......
