'18 GA LB JJ Peterson (Tennessee signee)

Guys like Phillips dropped weight to play 4-3 DE instead of being plugged in at DT. Won’t be a stretch for him to be at 290+ by Fall camp...same as Kongbo. Crosby was going to have to shed major weight to play any at DT. Kongbo also is more natural over 280. Emerson is already at 300...Lawless not far. None of these are coming in to play 4-3 and we haven’t even started on our linebackers if we land the one’s projected. It’s not going to be Alabama level, no one else is...not even UGA or Clemson. We’re already broken. They’re not going to be taught that.

Butler is another guy that was having to keep weight off to play DE.

We have had a crappy front four for the last two seasons. I don’t see the benefits of teaching our incoming recruits that crap and then after a year or two start teaching the 3-4. Same with linebackers. And are we going to run Pruitt’s preference for defensive backs or teach them something else first? Point is we’ve sucked the last two years. What’s the risk in moving forward?
I think Pruitt can handle this.

First, that's a good question. I think that the 3-4 to 4-3 argument is extremely overrated. I don't care what personnel you have, I care that you are putting your personnel in a postion to be successful. The 3-4 presents different philosiphies on how to attack the interior of a offensive scheme, somewhat opposite of what a 4-3 does. Now, you need different personnel because of the different philosophy. There has been a changing of systems lending toward the 3-4 because of its flexibility to the passing game, and that's why you are seeing a dime package defense (4-2-5) become a base defense. Really, there are issues with certain defenses with certain offensive formations (simply getting out leveraged by alignment) I.E. I am not going to run a 3-4 against a veer or a dive option attack. Furthermore, good coaches put good players in postion to be successful. You have to have a clear plan and you have to have the DUDES/knowledge to complete your plan. I am a very big supporter of Coach Pruitt simply because of his football IQ. Coach Pruitt made some tweaks to Saban's Cover 7 package and Saban kept them (that's saying a lot) so on that alone followed by his recruiting ability and the chance of getting a homerun staff... We are in good shape. I hope I answers your question.

The question was “what’s the risk in going forward?” The answer is IN THERE somewhere?

If we land Peterson and Walker, I could definitely see transitioning to 3-4 this year, moving Taylor to LB. We were going to struggle on DL this year no matter what. Kongbo has been an awkward fit between DT and DE in a 4-3, but has good size for DE in a 3-4 (although maybe not the mentality).

More important than all of that is that Pruitt doesn't have an unlimited leash. Year 1 can be forgiven, but we will be looking for results in year 2, and he will need his defense fully installed by then to provide those results.

Haha sorry. There is a risk because of the skill sets it requires. (Of your truly interested) go look on youtube at a odd defense or (I think) dontari Poe has a video about his techniques (he is a 3-4 nose) and then ask yourself can our guys get that done with the weight they are at. Explode the hips shoot the arm into the chest and extend!

When he was at Memphis? Or now?

At Memphis. Or kansas city

Couldn’t be Memphis. He was just a 2 Star tub of lard who never achieved past 2nd team All-C USA. He was a mess with promise IN COLLEGE. Maybe concentrate on FINISHED NFL PRODUCTS playin in college? Texas DC Todd Orlando has always ran a 3-4. Even at Utah State (when his NT was 245 lbs), but he built his rep on those performances. Appy State gave us some hell two seasons ago...3-4 with no prototypes. If the NCAA declared Alabama’s first two string DL’s ineligible, that third string would be highly recruited athletes not fully developed...and they wouldn’t convert them to a 4-3. Our defense blows monkey balls! There would be no setback in establishing the 3-4...no POSSIBLE setback.

DE's are typically in the 280-300 range while the NT is typically +330. We currently only have one player (Crosby) who is built to be a true NT, and we aren't recruiting any.

This used to be true, but look at Bama and UGA. Their NT run closer to 310-320 and UGA doesn't even have a DE above 280.

Edit: To add to this, I looked at the Titans, Steelers, and Texans depth charts for NT. McCullers was the only one listed 330+ on all three teams and he wasn't a starter. The listed starters were 305-315.

Outside of Tuttle who do we have that can play the Nose and be effective?

I think the point he was making is that they don't have to be over 330 lbs anymore. We certainly don't have a lot of options yet but people keep saying they have to be a certain size, and that doesn't appear to be the case anymore.

We don’t have 3-4 guys yet. Phillips can play if he actually plays with a mean streak. I’m done with the Kongbo hypebeast. If he produces then hats off to him but I’m not onboard. Anybody else we’ll see but I’m only banking on Tuttle if he stays healthy right now.

Yeah I don't know. Maybe Crosby, or Alexis Johnson. Paul Bain seems to be a myth but maybe he could actually play. haha. Could Kivon Bennett or Matthew Butler gain 25 or 30 lbs and help out?
