The four-star Class of 2023 quarterback from Brookwood High School in Snellville, Ga., said new Tennessee coach
Josh Heupel’s staff reaffirmed his previous offer from the Vols on Thursday. They’re now back on his radar, and he said he’s already hoping to travel to Knoxville this summer to take a firsthand look at the program.
The 6-foot-2, 217-pound Lonergan, who’s a top-100 prospect nationally in 247Sports’ rankings, said he “hadn’t heard from the old staff at all after the offer” Tennessee gave him last year. He learned of his offer from the Vols’ new staff during a conversation with Tennessee quarterbacks coach
Joey Halzle.
“He said that he really liked my film and thought I’m a good fit,” Lonergan said of Halzle. “(He) also liked how my coaches spoke about me.”
Lonergan said he has “not been able to visit Tennessee yet, but I’m trying to get up there this summer.” He admitted he doesn’t “know much about it,” but he’s interested in the Vols.
“Still early, so I’m researching a lot right now to see what I like,” said Lonergan, who’s ranked by 247Sports as the No. 81 overall prospect and No. 6 pro-style quarterback in the 2023 class and the No. 9 sophomore from the state of Georgia.
While he said Halzle didn’t tell him exactly what Tennessee’s new staff liked about his film, Lonergan said he believes he has “a strong athleticism to extend plays and good football IQ.”
He said he’s not familiar with the uptempo offense the Vols are installing under Heupel, but he’s looking forward to finding out more about Tennessee’s new system.
“They haven’t told me much yet, but I’m gonna look into it and probably talk about it the next time I talk to them,” Lonergan said.
