“I’ve been in contact with them for about two to three months now, but I hadn’t talked to them in a bit,” he said. “It came as a surprise, honestly. I was very excited about getting the offer. (With) just the history of Tennessee football, you know it’s a real good school. …

“I’m familiar with the program in general, and with players that have played there, like Alvin Kamara, Peyton Manning — just the program and its history.”

He said he’s also familiar with some of Tennessee’s current players, including sophomore quarterback Harrison Bailey and sophomore running back Jabari Small. He said he doesn’t personally know them — or any of the Vols’ other players — but he has seen them play.

“Just watched (Small’s) game in general awhile back on YouTube,” Johnson said. “He’s nice at his craft.”

Johnson said Tennessee is recruiting him as a running back, the same position “most schools are recruiting me” to play. But he said some teams are recruiting him as an athlete, leaving open the possibility that he could project as a slot receiver or “possibly” a defensive back in college.
