So I'm reading TOS's Q&A with Gabe Wright, particularly a question in regards to his visit with Alabama. He mentioned driving around on Saban's land which, if it's okay, what's the difference between having a coach drive you on his land and having a BBQ over at his house? Is this not a secondary violation as well?

VQ: What impressed you the most on your trip to Alabama

GW: I think spending time with coach (Nick) Saban showing me his real side, his home side. You can do a lot to a recruit when they're around but him interacting with his wife, I knew he couldn't be faking it and with all the coaching staff there. The main part was me having a chance for them to shut the town down just for me. I was the only official visitor that day. It's not really why I picked that weekend, it's the only weekend I had, but it ended up being a great way to take it. There's like 30 of them this weekend coming up and you won't get a lot of time. I literally got like four or five hours with coach Saban. We did everything from drive around on his land and driving to the facility. Just getting that one-on-one time definitely helped.

Saban does that for everybody. He has a ton of land and a bunch of ATV's. Recruits get to ride around on them and then his wife cooks a big breakfast. Then later they give them an Alabama jersey with their name and number on it. It all just sounds magical. :puke5:

i thought having your name on the jersey was a violation?

I think the NCAA has prevented stores from directly selling (and profiting) from jerseys with player's names on them. I know utsports sells game-won jerseys (mostly players that are not in the program and most of them are bench-warmers or long-snappers, etc).

I'd be curious about the actual verbage behind the NCAA rule that states this and if there is any rule preventing a school for doing this for recruiting reasons.

it is. I'm sure they put the jersey on but without names (and they don't keep it). Although ask Tuberville how that can influence a player so it may be worth it

i thought it was labeled as "simulating the gameday atmosphere" didnt we get a secondary violation for simulating a press conference and they termed it as that?

They weren't allowed to keep the jersey, but I promise you it had their name on it. Maybe it wasn't a violation at the time.

then show a pic and I'll forward it on the the NCAA just to be sure. It was a violation as far back as 2000

on official visits you can take recruits to the coaches home which Gabe was on an official visit. You cannot take kids to teh coaches home on an unofficial visit which was case with Bruce and those recruits.

Official Visits

In all sports other than Division I men’s basketball, you can have one expense-paid (official) visit to a particular campus beginning on the opening day of classes of your senior year. In Division I men’s basketball, you may have official visits beginning on January 1 of your junior year in high school. You may receive no more than five such visits. This restriction applies even if you are being recruited in more than one sport. You can’t have an official visit unless you have given the college your high-school (or college) academic transcript and a score from a PSAT, an SAT, a PACT Plus or an ACT taken on a national test date under national testing conditions. Your academic transcript may be a photocopy of your official high-school (or college) transcript. [Note: In this instance, the Division I school may use the services of the Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse to validate your credentials.]

During your official visit (which may not exceed 48 hours), you may receive round-trip transportation between your home (or high school) and the campus, and you (and your parents) may receive meals, lodging and complimentary admissions to campus athletics events. A coach may only accompany you on your official visit when the transportation occurs by automobile and all transportation occurs within the 48-hour period. Meals provided to you (and/or your parents) on an official visit may be provided either on or off the institution's campus.

The complimentary admissions you receive may provide you seating only in the facility's general seating area. You may not be given special seating (e.g., press box, bench area). In addition, a student host may help you (and your family) become acquainted with campus life. The host may spend $30 per day to cover all costs of entertaining you (and your parents, legal guardians or spouse); however, the money can't be used to purchase souvenirs such as T-shirts or other college mementos. Additionally, during a campus visit, the school may provide you with a student-athlete handbook.

No it's a secondary violation. The problem was Bruce Lied to the NCAA and said it did not happen. I think the NCAA had a pic of him at the bbq.

^obviously didn't read what LWS posted.

Thanks for the info.

Larry, what's your take on the jerseys that may or may not have the recruits' name on it that's being discussed above?

Not good to hear. He sounds like he's probably going to go to Alabama. Maybe Dooley can take him to his house and show him around or something. Saban's got the upperhand now for sure.

don't think you can do that but I would suspect almost everyone does but doesn't let the kids leave with them. There are a lot of things that might happen on a visit that are not within the rules but you try to contain them from being public. :)

Commentary right here: I don't get too hung up on all this talk about these rules violations from other schools. there are things that go on everywhere, and I mean everywhere, in recruiting. If a school is NOT pushing the envelope they will certainly not stay competitive in their comference.

I figured Saban introducing him to his 10 friends, all named Benjamin Franklin, would be more of a violation than riding around his property.
