1. Could this be Bruce's first good FT shooting team at Tennessee? Last game 67%, this game 80%. And that 80% couldn't have come at a better time, since (a) the game was close, and (b) the refs decided to call a pissload of fouls tonight. We went to the line 40 times, and we made them count.

2. 27 turnovers is just never acceptable, ever, under any circumstances.

3. The PG position is concerning. Golden didn't handle the game well down the stretch, but to be honest Melvin wasn't playing well at all, either.

4. Tatum definitely bailed our butts out with the two big threes and the FT's at the end, but he didn't look good tonight, to me. Everyone had turnovers, but his were particularly ugly IMO. To be fair, stat sheet only shows 2, compared with Tobias's 5 and Scotty's 4 and Melvin's 4. He just looked...off.

5. In his limited minutes, Brian Williams looked the best he's looked this year. I'm less concerned about him than I was a week ago.

6. Hopson really had a good offensive game. He had the one bad dribble-off-leg play in the second half, and then that little flip pass he did at the end of the game, that got stolen, was terrible. But he hit 4 beautiful jumpers from about 15 feet, and he had two really nice drives. When we go on scoring droughts I find myself looking for Hopson and Harris.

7. Bruce's teams at UT have not had much trouble with turnovers in his 5 years here. If we do this year, then all bets are off and we're going to suck. However, if they can get that under control, this will be Pearl's best half-court offense, for one main reason: Tobias Harris. Pearl teams have always gotten the run-out stuff, and the opportunistic stuff, and usually we find a way to get a couple big shots. But Tobias is a different sort of deal, because he can just go get a difficult, guarded 2-pointer. Makes everything easier.

8. We look talented but sloppy. Hopefully we can harness the talent and limit the slop. While we work on that, we'll eat at least one ugly early-season loss (similar to USC last year). We about did tonight.

9. Guess who the one guy on the team with no turnovers was? Steven Pearl. Also two huge baskets in the first half.

10. Kenny Hall had a good game tonight, all things considered. So did Fields. The center position acquitted itself well.

11. 27 turnovers. We're lucky to get out with a win. We gotta tighten up this bad boy before the real competition arrives.

Nice post stepcross! Well said.

The turnovers are gonna make every game close if they don't get that taken care of quick!

And finally Scotty Hopson showed a little bit of his talent tonight.

I think the number one problem for tennessee is the lack of LEADERSHIP. Someone, rather its Scotty or the freshman Tobias Harris, needs to step up and take that roll.
Without a leader, they will not make it very far in March.

We play well in spurts. We go up by 17 and just lay down on defense. Young team but even the veteran players did not give the effort that they had when building the lead. Waving at 3 Point shooters who can make it is never acceptable defense. This could be a great team if they hold the pedal down for 40 minutes.

My quick thoughts:

1) Please, please, please get Kenny Hall in more when he gets healthy.

2) Scotty Hopson was so frustrating tonight.

3) Tobias Harris should have 40 touches a game. I'm not even kidding.

4) Cam Tatum floated in and out...because of our offense.

5) When Golden is in, we need to push the ball more. He made 3 or 4 nice transition plays.

Thoughts, Golden needs to be more confident with the ball at the end of the game. He has very good handles and can pass the ball very well in transition, but makes mistakes in the half court offense, or with pressure around half court. Part of it is, nobody besides Tobias is coming back to help him.

In regards to Tobias, wow, he is going to be a star, definitely going to the league. Hopson has become more aggressive, he needs to work off pick and rolls on the outside because if he gets 1 step on the defender he can finish at the rim. Hopson can also shoot with space, but he is being double teamed when he dribbles down the middle of the court and typically turns it over. He should look to pass to a man cutting on the wing or in the post.

Scotty Hopson and Cam Tatum need to come to the ball and help out Golden more at the end of the game. Tatum's lack of movement without the basketball is very frustrating. He tends to make good decisions once he has the ball in his hands and is a good dribbler and free throw shooter, so it would be nice to see him get more touches at the end of the game.

The perimeter passing is absolutely horrible and weak. NOBODY is throwing bounce passes, and the passes are cavalier and will be stolen by stronger defensive teams. This is a common trait I have seen the past few years with Hopson and Tatum and I am now attributing it to coaching because it's infurious to see these weak passes get stolen on the perimeter.

If Kenny Hall can make ft's the way he did tonight, he will see more minutes. He is a great defender, rebounder and smart player, but his free throw shooting has been a major weakness UNTIL TONIGHT. He seemed more confident at the line and I think he realizes it will be a way to get him on the court. The Center position is up for grabs due to our Centers offensive inefficiencies, but each Center brings something different to the table. Also, Hall seemed a step slower with the ball in his hands, I think the foot/ankle injury has limited him.

I like the post! Here is my one complain to BP, get Skylar McBee out of the game!!! He is awful!!! Also, why does he have mcbee and pearl out there at the same time? It is like we are playing with 3 guys on offense.

Where did our 3 point offense go? It used to be our strength and several guys had the green light now it seems if nothing else works kick it. I'm not saying thats bad necessarily but we used to spreadem out a little more. Lasts years team would have taken 15 3 point shots in the 1st half, last night 3 for 11 for the game? I guess that says Bruce has decided to go to the paint for points this season. It will take a while for them to master that but if they do they will have a better tournament team.

The free throw shooting looked good and we definately needed it...One thing that scares me is the way we handle the ball...Way too many turnovers and dribbling off their legs and feet...We need a ball handler and bad...The other thing is that we had so many great passes not caught by the inside guys...We have to be looking for the ball inside and have to improve our hands because we had a lot of passes go off the hands that would have been a layup.

I think it has something to do with our inability to shoot and it beating us against Indy. Might also be related to our paint game being more than enough to overmatch a team like Belmont.

A bit of trivia (apologies in advance for those who hate stats):

Last night was the single worst turnover percentage of a Pearl-coached Tennessee team, at 34.9%.

The good news is, maybe that suggests that it's an aberration.

The bad news is, we can't be sure about that. Again, if it's the norm, we're in for a long season.

Percentage of what? Possessions?

Yes, percentage of offensive possessions that ended in turnovers.

For reference, last year our average was 19%, the previous three years it was 18%, and CJ's senior year it was an outstanding 17.6%, good for 15th in the nation and best in the SEC.

So 34% is very much uncharacteristic for Pearl-coached teams.
