The Mizzou series will be tough tough tough. The LV's need as many as they can get after the Florida beat down. Hope for a sweep and settle for winning the series 2-1.

They pitch their ace twice in a series I do believe.....so if we're able to beat her down pretty well we should be able to sweep the series but I'm like you 2-1 would be great!

The series is at Missouri. Going to be tough. If we could take two it would be fantastic.

Like the way the coaches are slowly working the freshmen pitchers into the games. I thought Bush looked pretty good. Not a lot of velocity but good spin and location. She could develop more velocity in time.

Bush is a location and control pitcher. Ralph says you can teach control but not velocity. I'm not sure I totally agree - seems like with strength training she could gain a little velocity, but she's never going to pitch 70 mph.

One of the greatest all time pitcher Cat Osterman topped out at 65 mph...but she could spin that softball like no one else!!

Alabama is putting a serious beat down on Mizzou right now. 15-0 bottom of the second, that's right second inning. They chased Lowary and another pitcher. After the 9-1 win on Saturday, Mizzou is looking pretty ordinary against Bama.

Solid if uninspired effort against Lipscomb in Nashville results in a 7-1 Tennessee win. Gabriel and Gaffin split the pitching duties with Gabriel getting the win and Gaffin the save. Gregg with 4 RBI's. 86 consecutive wins against in-state opponents for Tennessee softball.

Agreed about uninspired!!! I still do not understand as I have stated before why the batters will stand there with the bat on the shoulder and let the more hittable pitches go by and then swing at in the dirt or above the letter pitches. I know that Geer who is the leadoff hitter and a pretty good one I may add, will most always get to see 3 or 4 pitches and I agree with that because of her on base percentage, but the rest should be more aggressive at the plate. Again I am not suggesting to swing at every pitch but hit the first one that is a strike. Just my 2 cents worth.

Gaffin got the win, a starter has to complete four innings to qualify for a win.

pitch selection this year--not chasing bad pitches, which was a problem last year. Getting your pitch. And in fact we've done a very good job of drawing walks and scoring runs on only a hit or two in an inning. Good pitching selection is important. Sometimes your hitters can be too selective, as you say, but on the whole plate discipline is a good thing.

Plate discipline is a good thing but to the extent that you can be so selective you end up swinging at a less desirable pitch or left standing in the box with a backward K. Strikeouts I would guess is as high now as they were last year at this time. I can understand if it were mostly the freshmen but these upper classmen are doing it as well. I have heard Karen say on more than one occasion that we have to be more aggressive at the plate. I just happen to agree.

I agree with sccshortstop to an extent, as long as the batters have good discipline. I've coached boys and girls and the approach I teach with hitting is the same... if you know where the pitcher is going to throw the ball will it make you a better hitter? The answer is obviously yes. So my approach to hitting is that when you have 0 strikes, the batter's strike zone is an area that is VERY small (essentially the said batter's sweet spot). If you're anticipating a pitch in that area, and the pitcher delivers a pitch in that area, then there is no reason to not make solid contact with the ball. If the pitch is anywhere else outside of your selected area, even if it's still a strike, then the batter should not swing.

With one strike you then have a larger strike/swing zone, and obviously with two strikes you have the largest zone. All approaches to hitting though are also situational (how many runners on base, how many outs, how consistent is the pitcher, etc). But there is no excuse to have runner(s) in scoring position and not swing at a good pitch or to strike out with the bat on your shoulders.

The games we have had strikeout issues have been games where the umpire was calling a larger strike zone than they have been accustomed to.

The SEC and the NCAA have "shrunk" the strike zone the last couple of years and pitchers and hitters had to adjust. Now, when you get the rare umpire that calls things the "old" way, batters that don't adjust quickly go down on strikes or chase pitches that they fear will be strikes.

If you watched Tennessee's first game at Florida on TV, you saw a bigger strike zone than in most games. I know the umpire in that game was given a refresher on the standards afterward.
