Haven't seen much of the LVs team this season but what I saw the other day when Texas beat them was absolutely terrible. Where was the defense? At least in the second half Texas went to the basket at will. UT was dribble, dribble, dribble, miss. I certainly hope that performance is not indicative of the team as a whole. I fully support the Lady Vols and enjoy watching them perform but that game was painful to watch. Anyone else see what I saw?

Anyone that watched the game did. Unless Holly turns things around fast, Tennessee needs to find a coach next year.

Thanks GM for your continued timely posts.

Someone on this team needs to watch films on Burdick last year. She knew how to get to the foul line area, get the pass, and then quickly shoot her jump shot. She scored a lot of her points last year doing exactly that.

the Lady Vols do need somebody to step up and make the mid range shots that Burdick was making and get to the foul line

of course they need a lot of players to step up and make some shots, there have been a lot of wide open and easy shots being missed

and pay attention to where they are passing the ball, all the poor passing needs to stop,I understand they want to get inside and score points that way,but come on,throwing into double and triple coverage isn't smart basketball

how many times this year have we seen them throw the ball inside and there is no damn way that Russell or who ever has any chance at all to receive the pass ?

During the ETSU game, I was surprised to hear Izzy say, that basically, the Lady Vol players were not listening to what Holly wanted them to do. What do we have a bunch of hard headed players? Her comment seemed like more of an indictment of the players. Izzy reiterated several times that the players were not doing what Holly needed to get done. Izzy is not the only announcer to make that comment. We only have three new players on the team and one practiced with us last year. I know we have injuries, but I have seen other teams where new players were very effective in a new system. I know and accept the fact that the learning curve is not the same for every player. It seems to me that a lot of people are blaming the players, and in some part I agree, however, you have to dissect the coaching and why players are not getting it. Are they so dense that they think they can throw balls to post players that are well covered in a zone defense? Why do they have an open jump shot, pass it up for an errant pass in an attempt to score from the inside? Are we playing that different then when Izzy was our post? If these players are not listening to their coaches, then it is a good chance the coaches are no longer in control and the zoo is being run by the animals. If it is a case of, I just can't get my coaching plan over to these players, coaches need to come up with a way to make that happen. That must happen certainly when we have all hands on deck, if not we will have a long season with an unhappy ending.

Wow,Mule,3:48 A.M.?? Early up or late up? Good points, though,as always. Diamond looked like she could be the answer on shooting from the high post area, and she can get her own shot there as well as other parts of the court. Passing will improve by not forcing and by not trying to make highlight passes. It was good to see Cooper making shots as well. Maybe she has been thinking too much instead of just playing and competing. Probably the same could be said of all the Ladies. Injuries are taking a toll, but last night on the bench,Jasmine seemed to be alert and seeing things. When Massengil was concussed two years ago and was on the bench, she seemed to be out of touch. Hopefully that's a good sign that Jones will be back soon.

Holly said last night the doctors said Jasmine is fine. Jasmine and her Mother are airing on the side of caution because of long term damage. It's up to them when she plays and Holly is fine with that not going to push her.

They are 6 and 1 last game beat Penn State by five at their place. They have two terrific three point shooters hitting 44 percent and 39 percent.
I'm hoping were not in for the slow down game because if this one is in the fifties or low sixties it will be another close one. Hopefully we can get out and put up shots like the ETSU game get our shot total up around 70.
Massey has us as a 20 point favorite they are calling it Tennessee 71 to 51. If we get to seventy points I think we will have a comfortable win.

Imagine that!

For some unknown reason, I want to be fair with Holly. Louisville at the beginning of the year was in the final four arena, however, before last night they were 1 and 4. They have had injuries and looked bad in some of their games, however, with a few more hands on deck, last night against #17 Michigan State they bought it together. They were not committed to the pound it inside theory, although they did ocassionaly feed the ball inside, but played more of a motion offense. Louisville has a point guard, Johnson is her last name, I think, she is a speed merchant as is Te'a. She seem to be more in control than Te'a is but, that will come for Te'a. They have, as we do, some serious speed, but they turned it lose. Louisville allowed MSU to get close but finally put them away 85-71.

My point is, maybe we are going through the same growing pains as Louisville. It is quite possible there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I will allow a little sunshine of optimism to shine through. However, for the Ladies to be successful, the coaches need to change their offensive strategy and every player, I mean every player, must play more aggressive and take shots as they become available. Most of all, our offence needs to go through Diamond, until Russell becomes a dominating inside presence. For Russell to reach that status, she needs to be coached up. Right now she does not look like the same lady who dominated three years ago in the McDonalds' All American game or even in the Summer all star games against the world. The question is why?

maybe because Holly has told her not to foul out? With the refs calling every little bump as a foul she is scared to move on Defense or offense.

While I thing you could possible be correct, she still needs to be aggressive, right now she is playing very soft. I can't remember the game, but in one of our games Russell dominated the last two minutes. We need that type of aggression or she will never own the paint. She needs to be more aggressive in blocking out on rebounds. I believe that Russell, if coached right, has the ability to be a college All American.

Teacherdean,

This is like your 10,000 post raising the same issue.

To paraphrase: Look folks, Holly is here, we need to give her a chance, but you have SERIOUS concerns about the offensive and defensive schemes and see problems in just about how every player is being coached. Aggressive players need to be more controlled; the controlled players need to be more aggressive; speedy players need to slow down; slower players need to speed up. Whatever the LVs are doing seems to be exactly what they should not be doing. Why can't Holly see that?

But let's be clear you're not saying Holly should be fired but she is obviously not doing the job and the LVs are sliding into oblivion. Pestilence and Famine have set upon LV-land WHY? WHY?WHY? have the basketball Gods foresaken us? Whom must we sacrifice to regain their grace [:p; Okay, I am getting carried away...]

In the grand scheme, the LVs are still knocking on the door of a Final four. Great 8 last year, missing two key post players (and in Izzy their anchor player). This is still a 30 win team for all its foils. No, we are not Uconn but who the hell is? Uconn surpasses the LVs and the whole WCBB the day CP3 moved to LA and has not looked back.

Per the LVs, injuries have been a problem and the exigencies have led to the team not being as balanced as would be ideal. Per Mercedes, the high school game is way different from the college game. Some players develop more than others and the overall level of athleticism and the sophistication of defensive schemes goes way up. Watching Mercedes play, she looks like a player who has long relied on being way taller than her opposition. Unlike Griner or our own Izzy she is not much of a leaper and her inside post moves and footwork are pretty average. Now, she looks way, way better since her corrective surgery. She runs the floor very well. I think next year might when she really starts to show her stuff. She can't get that much stronger during the season and she needs more time to work on post moves (now that she in not impeded by her foot problems).

The consensus on this board is that Holly needs to loosen up her offensive scheme- the pass inside at all costs , no quick shooting approach is just not working.

Is Holly going to move away from that dead end approach? I am betting yes. DeShields is too dynamic of a player to be trapped in that kind of system. Players adjust to coaches and coaches also adjust to players.

Pretty clear what the difference is... And more and more people are seeing it.

Please forgive me for repeating myself I really didn't mean to upset you, however, I might repeat it 10,000 more times. You might want to ignore it next time. That is what I do when something is repeated 10,000 times. By the way this is about the 10,000th time you have told us we are not UCONN, we get it.

+1000000....I was shifting through all the post and TeacherDean is saying the same thing OVER and OVER and OVER....WE GET IT! You think Holly sucks! We don't need to hear it in damn near EVERY post.

I thought we looked like the team everyone hoped we'd be in that second half versus ETSU. I will be interested in how the teams plays moving forward. I think Mercedes has to get a lot more aggressive in her play. I think we need the ball in Diamond's hands to run the offense. Cooper should be in the game with Diamond she has a calming effect on Cooper. I would like to see us play a lot more four guard one post offense. We are much more aggressive in ball pressure when we play four guards.
