The WAC is the least impressive conference in the country but there is something to be said for the way he's turned that program around. They scored 34.4ppg(36th) and allowed 15.4ppg(8th). Their losses were by 3 at BYU and 2 at Wisconsin.
Adding to his impressive 2012 campaign, his 7-6 record in 2011 is more than meets the eye. His 6 losses...
31-21(-10) @ Fresno State
24-17(-7) Louisiana Tech
42-38(-4) @ Auburn
27-24(-3) @ BYU
35-34(-1) Colorado State - Overtime
24-23(-1) Ohio - Bowl Game
The idea of signing a Utah State coach probably doesn't appeal to most but the fact that he went 7-5 and 10-2 during the regular season the past 2 years in his 3rd and 4th season speaks volumes imo. The past 29 years prior to his arrival, Utah State finished above .500 just three times going 6-5(1980), 6-5(1996), and 7-5(1993). They only finished .500 once(1997). That's 25 years of finishing below .500 and this guy already has them up to 10 wins and was 5 points away from being undefeated.
If we're not going to pry a quality coach from a big time school, I must say that I've been impressed by Gary Andersen. Maybe just retain Chaney as OC and bring in Randy Shannon as DC... I know, stupid idea probably. Fwiw, Gary Andersen is a former DC so it would be nice to have a defensive minded coach. Especially if we were to keep Chaney and continue fielding a high powered offense.
Just a name that intrigues me more than some of the other names we've been hearing.
