So after reading up on him and his views I can't help but feel like this is the type of candidate I could actually get behind (and not just a lesser of 2 evils type vote).

- created a successful business from nothing
- elected Gov in a Dem leaning state and was reelected
- small gov't approach and not afraid to veto bills to keep that
- decriminalization of mj
- socially moderate/liberal (civil unions, abortion)
- did not raise taxes but made gov't smaller and left NM with a surplus

he's in the mold of Ron Paul says there is a difference

“There was a big difference between Ron Paul and me when it came to the ‘no,’” Johnson told POLITICO. “His ‘no’ was philosophical. It was reasoned. It was right. My ‘no’ actually put a stop to legislation. It cut spending. Mine carried further than just no. I had to follow through with the debate, discussion and dialogue on why my ‘no’ wouldn’t result in people starving, schools being shut down and the delivery of services to the poor wasn’t going to be curtailed.”
just wondering what I'm missing since he's seems to be what I'm looking for (at least on the surface)

Would no doubt be popular among many on this board.

However, I find it hard to believe a social moderate would make his way through the Republican hardliners.

I agree but I'm tired of not really liking who I vote for. I would prefer to back a losing candidate I believe in than choose from the current group of front runners. None of them get me excited in any way

Of most of the names I hear, there's not a chance I'd really go to vote for a single one of them.

Johnson sounds interesting, but I'd need to hear more about his other views.

I had the same thought after reading about him yesterday, PJ.

His biggest problem is that he's not afraid to discuss things. So what do most people ask him about? His decriminalization of marijuana and why...which includes his usage a few years back instead of painkillers. So most videos online are of him talking about marijuana which makes him seem like a fake candidate. And I'm sure if he was to jump to the spotlight, that would only intensify. But his track record in New Mexico says a lot more than that. And he's backed off the marijuana issue to just declare it a state's issue.

Now is the best chance to get a social moderate on the ticket.

our current and previous Pres were also fans of recreational drugs yet it didn't seem to hinder them. If it's explained correctly I can't see how at least a few minds wouldn't be changed.

I'm just a big fan of his idea of smaller gov't and the rest just happens to match

I think he has a chance to replicate the Ron Paul love without the crazy labels built up over time. But Ron Paul needs to not run for Johnson to grab his voters.

Why go for Ron Paul Lite when the real thing is sitting right there in front of you with a road map to freedom and prosperity?

and by "RP lite" you mean a man who has actually done it? That's the biggest difference to me based on his history in NM
