Gatorade Players of the Year in the past

Another post got me thinking about former players of the year and how they were ranked coming out of highschool. Below is a list going back to 2003, and Worley is the only 3 star in the group. IMO, it means absolutely nothing, I just found it interesting that the former players were ranked so much higher. He is in good company. :thumbsup:

Justin Worley - 3 star ranked 30th pro-style QB(Rivals)
Malcolm Jones - 4 star ranked 9th athlete(Rivals)
Garret Gilbert - 5 star ranked 2nd pro-style QB(Rivals)
Matt Barkley - 5 star ranked 1st pro-style QB(Rivals)
John Brantley - 4 star ranked 3rd pro-style QB(Rivals)
Mitch Mustain - 5 star ranked 2nd pro-style QB(Rivals)
Greg Paulus - 4 star ranked 9th pro-style QB(Scout)
Jeff Byers - 5 star ranked 1st OC(Rivals)
Kyle Wright - 5 star ranked 1st pro-style QB(Rivals)

Worley is very underrated...he isn't the best Qb in this class, not even top 5 but he is certainly better than 30th. That is a joke.

The award looks at on field performance, academics, and character. Not comparable to an award like the Heisman.

I have never seen Worley play except for highlight clips, but Scout lists his weaknesses as arm strength and release. Without those two things, a prostyle QB can be effective in HS, but a Rick Clausen in college. If he can't get rid of it, he's sacked like Simms; and if he can't zing it, today's corners close so fast that the ball can't get there.
